† Memory of Rev. Feofan Pechersky The relics of St. Theophan the Faster rest openly in the Anthony Cave. The circumstances of his life are not described in the monuments of the Lavra. – The name of the faster with whom he is known makes it clear that strict fasting was the way by which he approached the Lord 150. Saint Philip the Apostle from 70 151 Philip, originally from Caesarea in Palestine, was at first one of the 7 deacons who were entrusted with caring for the poor and widows. Then, forced to leave Jerusalem during the persecution of the disciples of Christ by the Jews, he went to Samaria, and there he preached the Gospel with such power that many people were baptized by him. “And then there was great joy in that city. There was also a certain man there, named Simon, who had previously performed magic and astonished the people of Samaria, posing as someone great. Everyone listened to him, from the smallest to the greatest, saying: This is the great power of God. But when they believed Philip, preaching the gospel of the Kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized. Simon himself believed and, having been baptized, did not leave Philip; and seeing great powers and signs being done, he was amazed” (Acts 8:8-13). “One day an angel of the Lord appeared to Philip and said: Get up and go at noon to the road that goes from Jerusalem to Gaza, to the one that is empty. He got up and walked away. And so the Ethiopian husband, a eunuch, a nobleman of Candace, the queen of Ethiopia, the keeper of all her treasures, who came to Jerusalem to worship, returned and, sitting on his chariot, read the prophet Isaiah. “The Spirit said to Philip: Come and dock with this chariot.” Philip came up and, hearing that he was reading the prophet Isaiah, said: Do you understand what you are reading? - He said: How can I understand if someone does not instruct me? And he asked Philip to come up and sit with him. And the passage from Scripture that he read was this: “He was led like a sheep to the slaughter; and as a lamb is silent before its shearers, so He opens not His mouth. - In His humiliation, His judgment was completed. But who will explain His generation? for His life will be lifted up from the earth” (Is. 53:7–8). The eunuch said to Philip: I beg you to tell me about whom the prophet is speaking? Is it about yourself or about someone else? Philip opened his mouth and, beginning from this Scripture, preached to him the good news about Jesus. Meanwhile, continuing their journey, they came to water, and the eunuch said: here is water; What prevents me from being baptized? Philip said to him: if you believe with all your heart, it is possible. He answered and said: I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. - And he ordered the chariot to stop, and both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and baptized him. When they came out of the water, the Holy Spirit descended on the eunuch, and Philip was taken away by the angel of the Lord, and the eunuch no longer had him and continued on his way, rejoicing. And Philip ended up in Azoth; and as he passed through, he preached the gospel to all the cities until he came to Caesarea” (Acts 8:26–40). Here he lived for some time in his house, where the Apostle Paul visited him and spent “many days” with him, which is also mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles, as well as the fact that Philip the Evangelist, one of the seven deacons, “had four daughters, virgins who prophesied” (Acts 21:8-9). Then Ap. Philip was a bishop in the Lydian city of Trallia, in Mal. Asia, and, preaching all his life, and confirming his preaching with numerous miracles, died in old age. Rev. Theophan the confessor and creator of canons, called the inscribed Theophan, together with his elder brother Theodore (comm. December 27), monks of the Palestine monastery of St. Savvas are called inscribed because on their faces, after the cruel torture to which they were subjected as defenders of icon veneration, the Greek Emperor Theophilus ordered shameful verses to be inscribed, with the painful inscription of which the faces of the confessors were burned out to the very leaders with the help of red-hot needles. Theophanes was born in Arabia from pious parents, who were particularly distinguished by their love of strangers. Having raised his soul under good family influence, and having received a scientific education in the house of a wealthy father, Theophan and his brother completed both in the Lavra of St. Savva - under the leadership of one pious and learned presbyter. The fruits of a grace-filled upbringing were reflected in the feat of a lifetime. During the iconoclasm for 25 years, Theophan was a zealous defender and confessor of Orthodoxy; endured various tortures: shackles, hunger, exile; his brother and associate Theodore was in exile and died; Theophan lived to see the end of the iconoclasm that was disturbing the Church and was ordained Metropolitan of Nicaea. When there were those dissatisfied with this arrangement, objecting that Theophan was a Syrian and there was no one to guarantee that he was Orthodox, then St. Methodius, who appointed Theophan a metropolitan, pointing to his face, said: “after such an inscription there is no need to wish for better testimony in his Orthodox confession”... Theophan died peacefully around 847. He left behind many works in defense of Orthodoxy and is especially known as a writer of canons, the number of which extends to 145. “Make up St. Theophan canon solemn about the honor of St. icons and many other things of the Church of Christ, but leave the canons and useful writings,” says St. Demetrius about the works of St. Theophanes, for which he is so glorified in the Greek Menaion: “like a bright light you illuminate the whole sunflower with the light of your dogmas; like David, striking the zither, you sing worthy songs to the saints of Christ and make the whole of Epirus known. That is why you are worthily glorified, sacred monk Theophanes.” Its best canons are dedicated to the Apostles. Here are some of them: “Come, let us bless the holy Apostles - the pillars of the Church, reverently established on the basis of faith and establishing all the faithful, so that we may be saved by their prayers.” “I condemn myself, condemned before judgment, in trembling, lost: I have acquired countless evil deeds; and therefore I pray, “save me, desperate, with the holy prayers of Your Apostles!” “Unshakable pillars of piety! raise me up, defeated by the flattery of the enemy and lying miserably on the ground and perplexed, so that I too will find forgiveness for my sins.” “Together with the holy prophets, the Apostles, I and the martyrs diligently pray, O Pure One, to the Lord incarnate from You, that He may put to death all our carnal passions and grant us eternal life.” “You have filled the boundaries of the universe with Divine teaching; fill my soul with good deeds and good thoughts, witnesses of Christ.” “As disciples of Christ, deliver me from the countless temptations of the evil one, sorrow, cramped conditions and circumstances.” “Alas, my poor and unhappy soul! so often you sin and anger God; How will you ask for forgiveness for the evil deeds that you never stop committing?” “The divine ladder, seen by Jacob, along which God descended to lift us up! V, 502), it is known that “she labored near Demetrias, a place named after the goddess Demeter, north of Tarsus, and not in Thessaly; Her advice was used by three pious men - Pappas, Philoteras and Philokiris, who together with her performed miracles and spread the Gospel, but the pagans who rebelled against them forced them to leave this place. Zinaida returned to the house (cave) and, leaving the house one day, pierced her leg with a thorn - while, as another legend tells, when she was collecting herbs to treat the sick - and immediately died; one pious man laid her body in a new coffin.” “In modern times,” says the biography, “a miracle happened: a shepherd boy sat down on her grave, fell asleep and became ill, but when his father turned to the saint with prayer, he received healing” 153. St. Zinaida and her sister Philonida are considered relatives of St. Apostle Paul, who gave away all their property and renounced the world when they were enlightened by faith in Jesus Christ.
