So, from the very beginning, “Daniel decided in his heart not to be defiled by the dishes from the king’s table and the wine that the king drinks,” 230 and asked the commander placed over him to allow him and his three comrades to eat only vegetables. But he, obliged to take care of the youths, fearing that they would not lose weight and spoil their health from insufficient food, did not allow them to deprive themselves of the food assigned to them from the royal table. “Make an experiment on your servants for ten days,” Daniel then began to persuade his boss Amelsar, “let them give us vegetables for food and water to drink, and then let our faces and the faces of those youths who eat the royal food appear before you, and then do with your servants as you see.” “He obeyed them in this and tested them for ten days. After ten days, their faces turned out to be more beautiful, and their bodies were fuller than all those youths who ate the royal dishes. Having learned about the formidable demand of the king, Daniel appeared to him and begged him to give him time to present the interpretation of the dream... and he himself, having come to his house, “told the matter to Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, his comrades, so that they asked mercy from the God of Heaven about this secret... And then the secret was revealed to Daniel in a night vision, and Daniel blessed the God of Heaven and said: blessed be the name of the Lord from century to century! for with Him is wisdom and power. He changes the times and the years; deposes kings and installs kings; gives wisdom to the wise and understanding to the understanding. And deliver us by the power of Your wonders, and give glory to Your name, O Lord. It consisted of a mysterious dream, in which he imagined a large, strong tree standing in the middle of the earth, its height reaching to the sky; “Its leaves were beautiful, and there was plenty of fruit on it, and there was food on it for everyone; the beasts of the field found shade under it, and the birds of the air nested in its branches, and all flesh was fed from it.” And suddenly the king saw that “the Wakeful and Holy One came down from heaven and, exclaiming loudly, said: “Cut down this tree, chop off its branches, shake off the leaves from it and scatter its fruits; let the beasts be removed from under it and the birds from its branches. But leave its main root in the ground, and let it be watered by heavenly dew in the bonds of iron and copper among the grass of the field, and let there be a part of it in the grass of the earth with the animals... The heart of man will be taken away from him, and the heart of an animal will be given to him, and seven times will pass over him... Therefore, king, may my advice be acceptable to you: atone for your sins with righteousness and your iniquities with mercy towards the poor; this is how long your peace can last” 243. At the end of seven years, God had mercy on him and restored reason to him who had fallen into madness. “I lifted my eyes to heaven,” says Nebuchadnezzar himself, “and my mind returned to me; and I blessed the Most High, praised and glorified the Ever-present, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and whose kingdom endures forever. And all those living on earth mean nothing; He acts according to His will, both in the heavenly army and among those living on earth; and there is no one who can resist His hand and say to Him: What have you done? On the same night Belshazzar was killed, and Darius the Mede took over the kingdom, being 62 years old." 249 Daniel retained his place, “the third ruler in the state,” under Darius, who especially loved him and brought him closer to himself. Other nobles hated Daniel for this and, in order to destroy him, persuaded the king to issue such a decree, by virtue of which none of his subjects for thirty days would dare to ask anything from any God or people, but only from the king, as a ruler so powerful that he himself, like a deity, is able to satisfy every subject in every need. “They proposed this to the king, as if in order to arouse complete reverence for his person and thus confirm the obedience of his subjects to him. “Whoever does not fulfill such a decree,” it was added at the conclusion of the decree, “whoever for thirty days asks any god or person other than the king, he, as guilty of disrespect for the king, must be thrown into a ditch to be devoured by lions.” Darius did not realize that the courtiers’ proposal to issue such a decree was directed against Daniel, who, as a strict executor of the father’s law, would certainly turn out to be a violator of it, and he signed the decree.
