Part 2 This second part of the fifth volume of “Collected opinions and reviews of Philaret, Metropolitan of Moscow and Kolomna, on educational and church-state issues” ends the publication of the written works of the ever-memorable Moscow saint, undertaken in 1884, with the permission of the Holy Synod. This part included the last papers of the Metropolitan, from January 4, 1864 to November 17, 1867, in total 167 articles. Such an abundance of papers, written by the saint in less than three years and, moreover, at the end of his days, is explained solely by the circumstances of the time, which called the saint to intensified activity. The sixties were primarily a time of reforms and transformations. Following the great act of February 19, 1861 on the liberation of peasants from serfdom, written by the hand of the saint, intensive work began to transform judicial and zemstvo institutions, universities and religious educational institutions. Under the influence of an almost universal fascination with novelty and a further progressive movement towards novelty, in the very area of ​​the church, which from time immemorial was distinguished by fidelity to tradition, questions about innovation began to arise. These are questions about openness and elections, about expanding freedom of marriage. At the same time, people passionate about the idea of ​​freedom made demands to grant the schism the rights to a separate existence in a state with its own hierarchy, regardless of the hierarchy of the dominant church. This book testifies with what wise foresight and with what deep knowledge of historical life the high priest of the Moscow church treated all the issues and demands that so worried Russian society in the sixties. This volume, like the previous ones, is provided with indexes of personal names and objects.
