"Hallelujah" And here the prophetic word commands to sing songs; also predicts the victory won upon return. Moreover, it foreshadows how the apostolic preaching flows through the entire universe with all speed. Ps.147:1. Praise, O Jerusalem, the Lord; Praise, O Zion, your God. Ps.147:2. For He strengthens the ropes of your gates, He blesses your sons in your midst. “Praise the Lord in Jerusalem, praise your God in Zion”: “For strengthen the faith of your gates.” With God's irresistible help, freed from enemies, and not seeing the besiegers around you, with chants, Jerusalem, give back to the Benefactor. The Prophet calls Jerusalem not the buildings, but the inhabitants of the city. “Bless your sons in you”; because, having received the blessing of good fortune and many children, you became crowded. Ps.147:3. Establishes peace within your borders; satisfies you with the fatness of wheat. “Set the limits of your world.” You have been granted the whole world; because, brought into fear by the beating of your enemies, others do not dare to attack you. “And satisfy thee with the fat of the wheat.” God has enriched you with earthly blessings. The Prophet called the abundance of fruits “the fat of wheat,” partly giving a name to the whole; because wheat is a grain plant, and the “fat of wheat” is the best bread. But the Prophet indicated this and other fruits. The Jews of ancient times used this kind of industry for them; but, having risen up against the Savior with fury, they lost all their blessings. Therefore, the prophetic word, having said this about the Jews, foretells the salvation of the pagans. Ps.147:4. Sends His word to the earth; His word flows quickly. “Send Your word to the earth; His word flows swiftly. “The Word” is what the Prophet called the gospel sermon here. And the Lord sent preaching not only to the Jews, but also to all other people. For he said: “Go and teach all languages” (Matthew 28:19). The Prophet also showed the speed of the current. For in a short time the Apostles filled all the land and sea with their teachings. Foreseeing this, the Prophet said: “His word flows with speed.” And there is nothing new or extraordinary in this; because everything yields to God's will. Therefore, as quickly as God pleases, the watery nature alone instantly changes into thousands of species. Ps.147:5. Gives snow like a wave; frost falls like ash. Ps.147:6. Throws His hail in pieces; Who can resist His frost? “He who gives His snow like a wave, and sprinkles darkness like ashes”: “He who throws His nakedness like bread.” For from the same essence of waters hard ice is made, as well as rare and soft snow, like a tuft of wool, and still damp dust; for such is the composition of the fog. “Who can stand against the face of His scum? “Effortlessly changes the air, which had been burning for a short time and in a short time makes it chilling. Ps.147:7. He will send His word, and everything will melt; He will blow His wind, and the waters will flow. “His Word fades, and I fail: His Spirit breathes, and the waters flow out.” But again, as soon as it pleases, it easily decomposes the hardened water and makes it rush along in a swift stream. As soon as the midday wind blows, snow and ice melt into the water. The Prophet made this description not without intention, but it meant something else. Just as falling snow fills the mountains, and when melted it flows into nearby rivers and brings irrigation to other countries: so the abundance of God-given blessings was communicated to the first Jews, and when they rejected grace, the holy Apostles, as if by some rivers, brought irrigation of the teachings to the pagans. Ps.147:8. He declared His word to Jacob, His statutes and His judgments to Israel. “Proclaim Your Word to Jacob, Your justifications and judgments to Israel.” Anciently the law was given to them, and then grace; but the Jews turned out to be unworthy of both. Ps.147:9. He did not do this to any other people, and they do not know His judgments. Hallelujah. “Do not do this to every tongue, and do not show Your destiny to them.” He did not give the Law of Moses to any of the pagans, nor did he allow them to use the Prophets; He honored some of the Jews with such irrigation; but they became ungrateful to the Benefactor, and the pagans, having received a ray of mental light from the sacred Apostles, recognized their Creator, and rendered Him unceasing honor.
