"Hallelujah" Another song, also written for our benefit, and rousing people to the chant of the Benefactor. Ps.112:1. Praise, O servants of the Lord, praise the name of the Lord. Ps.113:2. Blessed be the name of the Lord from now on and forever. "Praise the Lord, lads." The Prophet here calls youths not young people, as others have suggested, but slaves. For this is how Aquila, and Symmachus, and Theodotion translated it; and in Hebrew it is said: “avdi”; and also from the Sirian translator. And the word: “praise” in Hebrew reads: “alleluia”: whence it is clear that “alleluia” is interpreted: “praise the Lord.” "Praise the name of the Lord." “Blessed be the name of the Lord from now on and forever.” You, as slaves and those who have received existence from God, says the Prophet, should sing songs to His name, although you do not know nature; because it has beginningless and eternal blessing and praise. This is what the words mean: “from century to century.” We, too, must offer a song of thanksgiving to Him, as the Creator. Ps.112:3. From the rising of the sun to the west, let the name of the Lord be glorified. “From the east of the sun to the west the name of the Lord is praised.” The psalm foreshadows the knowledge of God communicated to the pagans after the incarnation of the Only Begotten. For in ancient times the God of all things was hymned not even by all Jews, but only by many who lived piously. But after the birth of the Virgin, and after saving suffering, “the broadcasting” of the preachers of truth went out into the whole earth, “and their words to the ends of the world” (Psalm 18:5), and “the whole earth of knowledge” of the Lord was filled, “as if there were plenty of water” to cover the seas (Hab. 2:14). This God of all spoke through the mouth of another Prophet: “My will is not done in you, and I will not accept sacrifice at your hands. From the east of the sun to the west my name is made known among the nations, and in every place incense is offered to my name, and the sacrifice is pure” (Mal. 1:10-11). In accordance with this, he also predicts this spiritual sweet singing. Ps.112:4. The Lord is high above all nations; above the heavens is His glory. “High is the Lord above all tongues: above the heavens is His glory.” All nations knew that He is the Most High and God, the Creator of all, praised by the heavenly Angels. Ps.112:5. Who is like the Lord our God, who dwelleth on high. Ps.112:6. He bends down to look at heaven and earth. “Who is the Lord our God?” Divine Scripture repeats this many times. And blessed Moses says: “Who is like You in God, Lord, who is like You? glorified among the Saints” (Ex. 15:11); and blessed David said: “Who in the clouds can be equal to the Lord? Will he become like the Lord among the sons of God” (Ps. 88:7)? And again: “Who is God except the Lord? Or who is the God of our God” (Psalm 17:32)? From all these sayings we understand that God is incomparable to all, and that no being can equal God’s nature, or power, or activity. “Live on the high”, “And look upon the humble in heaven and on earth.” For He who is revered as living in heaven oversees all things and leaves nothing that exists without His care. Ps.112:7. He raises the poor from the dust, and raises the needy from the clay. Ps.112:8. To make him sit with the princes, with the princes of his people. “Raise up the poor from the earth, and raise up the wretched from the rot”: “Set him from the princes, from the princes of your people.” Blessed Anna also said this, composing a song of thanksgiving to God (1 Samuel 2:8). This, as we see, is what the God of all always does; so he made blessed David, who was a shepherd, king; so Joseph, who fell into slavery, was placed on the royal throne; so he made Moses, who was a shepherd of the sheep, a ruler of his people, and made him God to Pharaoh; Thus, the nations, enslaved by the poverty of wickedness and sitting on the rot of sin, were honored with the blessings bestowed on Israel; Thus, human nature, which had fallen to the very bottom of death, he took, raised and placed “above all principality and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in the world to come” (Eph. 1:21). Ps.112:9. Does he bring a barren woman into the home as a mother who rejoices over her children? Hallelujah! “Infuse barrenness into the house, mother who rejoices over her children.” And this can also be seen happening in public. For he made Sarah, and Rebecca, and Rachel, and Anna, and Sampson’s mother, and Elizabeth, who were barren, mothers of children. In a more personal and true sense, this can be seen in the Church; because he made her, from ancient times barren and childless, a mother rejoicing over countless children, according to the prophecy, which says: “The barren one who did not give birth rejoiced; she who was not sick with stomach cried and cried, for there are many more empty children than those who have husbands” (Is. 54:1).
