Epistle to Titus

Paul left Titus in Crete (Titus 1:5) as primate and bishop, so that he, going around the cities, would appoint elders in each of them and correct other shortcomings in different places. When Paul heard that some of the circumcision began to confuse the minds of the pagans with the teaching about keeping the commandments of the law, then he hastened to write about the reason why he left him (Titus) in Crete, giving at the same time instructions regarding the circumcision, who had to be stopped. These circumcised ones, because of their greed, corrupted all houses and, for the sake of vile profit, taught what should not be done. And just as some of the troublemakers said about Titus that he was not sent by Paul, Paul writes to him and in the letter shows the authority that Titus already had without the letter. He also commands him in the letter to appoint elders, appoint deacons, stop the lips of the circumcised, and put everything in proper order, and so that later, when the apostle sends ambassadors to him (Artema and Tychicus), he comes to him in Nicopolis, where the apostle was (Titus 3:12).
