“Ask the Lord about us, for Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon is rising against us” (Jer. 21:2). Thus says Zedekiah, the wicked king, who took the place of the like wicked king Jehoiachin, the son of his brother. Zedekiah was a slave to the Babylonians, for from them he received his kingdom. But when he threw off the yoke of slavery, after eleven years of reign he was besieged in his royal city; then he sent ambassadors to Jeremiah to ask the Lord for comfort and protection for the besieged, because there was no help for them from anywhere. Jeremiah replied that the Lord “will destroy the wicked with evil” (Matthew 21:41) for the guilts counted before, especially for the oppression of the poor and needy, whom the Jews then offended and oppressed. After reproof, the prophet calls the Jews to repentance with the hope of relief. You might be interested in:
