Then Moses counts the generations descended from Noah, namely fifteen generations from Japheth, counting with him; thirty generations from Ham, counting also with him, excluding the Philistines and Cappadocians, who descended from them after; twenty-seven generations from Shem, counting with him. There were seventy-two generations in total. Each of them formed a special people and language, and each lived in its own land. It is said about Nevrod: “This is a giant fisher before the Lord God” (Gen. 10:9), because, according to God’s will, he fought with every tribe and forced these tribes to retire to those countries that were assigned to them by God. “For this reason they say: Nevrod is a giant fisher before the Lord” (Gen. 10:9), that is, this is where the custom originated, if someone expresses goodwill to a prince or commander, to say: “Be like Nevrod, a giant fisher, glorified in the battles of the Lord.” Nevrod reigned in Arak, that is, in Edessa, in Ahara, that is, in Nineveh, in Halania, that is, in Ctesiphon, in Rooboth, that is, in Adiabene, in Halaya, that is, in Hetra, in Ras or Rish-Ain, which was at that time a great city.
