1–9. The insignificance of idols. 10–16. The Greatness of Jehovah. 17–25. It is necessary to bow before the judgment of Jehovah. Jeremiah 10:1–9. All pagan signs and the most pagan service to the gods, especially the worship of various idols, are extremely meaningless. The prophet speaks with irony about how these idols are made. Jer.10:1. Hear the word that the Lord speaks to you, O house of Israel. “House of Israel” - that is, the northern tribes in captivity (cf. Jer 3.11 et seq.; Jer 7.12). Jer.10:2. Thus says the Lord: Do not learn the ways of the pagans and do not fear the signs of heaven, which the pagans fear. “The ways of the pagans” are the way of life of the pagans and especially their religion. – “Signs of Heaven” – some unusual phenomena in the world of heavenly bodies. Jer.10:3. For the rules of nations are empty: they cut down a tree in the forest, they shape it with the hands of a carpenter with an axe, “Charter” – that is, the main provisions of the faith. (On idols cf. Isaiah 40.19 et seq.; Is. 41.7; Is. 44.12 et seq.) Jer.10:5. They are like a sharpened pillar and do not speak; They wear them because they cannot walk. Do not be afraid of them, for they cannot cause harm, but they cannot do good either. “Like a sharpened pillar” - more precisely: like a scarecrow for birds in the garden. (Cf. Is 46.7 and Is 41.23). Jer.10:9. Silver broken into sheets was brought from Tarshish, gold from Uphaz, the work of an artist and the hands of a smelter; their clothes are hyacinth and purple: all this is the work of skilled people. "Ufaz" - Ophir (Targum, Theodotion). Jeremiah 10:10–16. In contrast to the insignificance of idols, the prophet depicts the greatness of Jehovah, before whom all idols fall. Jer.10:13. At His voice the waters in the heavens roar, and He raises up the clouds from the ends of the earth, creates lightning in the midst of the rain, and brings forth the wind from His storehouses. On the storehouses of the wind, see Job 38.22. Jeremiah 10:17–25. The prophet foresees an attack by the Babylonians on Jerusalem, the fall of the city and the taking of the Jewish people into captivity. One should not grumble against such a decision of Jehovah, because the Jews themselves are guilty of their destruction. Moreover, one cannot look at the defeat of the Jews as final. Jer.10:17. Remove your property from the land, which is under siege; Here the prophet is obviously addressing the inhabitants of Jerusalem. Jer.10:19. Woe to me in my contrition; My wound is painful, but I say to myself: “Truly, this is my sorrow, and I will bear it; “My sorrow” - that is, it is deserved by me. The prophet speaks on behalf of the best part of the Jewish people. Jer.10:24. Punish me, Lord, but in truth, not in Your anger, so as not to belittle me. The people beg God to reduce the punishment they deserve. Special notes. Department from 1st to 16th Art. is completely independent, while 17–25 tbsp. in form and content they are clearly adjacent to previous sayings from the times of Josiah and Joachim and, perhaps, form a conclusion to the church speech contained in Chapters VII-IX. – The text of LXX does not contain 6, 7, 8 and 10 art.
