All nations should revere God, who demonstrated his power by trampling under foot the enemies of Jacob, whom he loved (2–5). The Lord ascended to Zion with the sound of trumpets. Sing praises to Him, the King of all the earth (6–8). By defeating the princes of the pagan nations, the Lord showed that He was “exalted” above them (9–10). Ps.46:2. Clasp your hands, all nations, shout to God with a voice of joy; The writer of the psalm saw in the defeat of the pagan peoples clear proof that the God of the Jews is the true God. According to him, all pagan tribes should actually be convinced of this, which is why the writer invites them to rejoice with him, since they have now learned where the true God is. Ps.46:4. He has brought nations and nations under our feet; “Conquer... under your feet” - completely weaken, make the enemy harmless and non-dangerous. Ps.46:5. He chose for us our inheritance, the beauty of Jacob, whom He loved. “He chose us an inheritance,” that is, Palestine, which God appointed for the possession of the Jewish people. This heritage is the “beauty of Jacob”; the Jew is proud of Palestine as a rich and fertile land. Ps.46:6. God arose with shouting, the Lord with the sound of a trumpet. The Ascension of the Lord - carrying the Icon of the Covenant after speaking against the enemies in the Temple of Jerusalem. This procession was usually accompanied by the singing of hymns with the accompaniment of musical instruments. Ps.46:8. for God is the King of all the earth; Sing everything wisely. “Sing all wisely”—thoughtfully, worthy of God. Ps.46:10. the princes of the nations gathered to the people of the God of Abraham, for the shields of the earth are God’s; He is exalted above them. “The princes of the nations gathered to the people of the God of Abraham” for conquest purposes. These peoples were ruled by their “shields” - military leaders and kings, on whose experience and strength the troops relied.
