And I went up to him and killed him, for I knew that he would not live after his fall; and I took the [royal] crown that was on his head, and the bracelet that was on his hand, and brought them to my master here. Details not noted in (1 Samuel 31:1–6). 2 Samuel 1:14. Then David said to him: How were you not afraid to raise your hand to kill the Lord’s anointed? 2 Samuel 1:15. And David called one of the youths and said to him: Come, kill him. 2 Samuel 1:16. And he killed him, and he died. And David said to him, “Your blood is on your head, for your mouth testified against you when you said, “I have killed the Lord’s anointed.” Wed. (1 Samuel 24:1–4,26:1–24). 2 Samuel 1:18. and commanded the sons of Judah to be taught the bow, as it is written in the book of the Righteous One, and said: “And he commanded that the sons of Judah should be taught the bow.” The word “bow,” according to Calmet’s explanation, was used to describe the following mournful song of David on the occasion of the death of Saul and Jonathan, whose bow and sword “did not return in vain—without the blood of the wounded, without the fatness of the mighty” (2 Samuel 1:22).
