An instructive reminder to the stiff-necked people that if they inherit the land of promise, it will not be because of their righteousness, but by the grace of God. At the end of the forty days and forty nights the Lord gave me two tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant, Deut.9:12. and the Lord said to me: Arise, get away from here quickly, for your people, whom you brought out of Egypt, have become corrupt; They soon turned away from the path that I commanded them; they made themselves a cast image. Deut.9:13. And the Lord said to me: [I told you once and again:] I ​​see this people, behold, they are a stiff-necked people; Deut.9:14. do not hold back Me, and I will destroy them and blot out their name from under heaven, and from you I will make a nation that will be [larger,] stronger and more numerous than they. Deut.9:15. I turned and left the mountain, and the mountain was burning with fire; the two tablets of the covenant were in both my hands; Deut.9:16. and I saw that you sinned against the Lord your God, you made for yourself a molten calf, and you quickly turned away from the path that the Lord commanded you [to keep]. Deut.9:17. and I took both tables, and threw them out of both my hands, and broke them before your eyes. Deut.9:18. And [a second time] I prostrated myself before the Lord, and prayed as before for forty days and forty nights, without eating bread or drinking water, for all your sins which you have committed, having done evil in the sight of the Lord [your God] and having provoked Him to anger; Deut.9:19. for I was afraid of the anger and rage with which the Lord was angry with you and wanted to destroy you. And the Lord listened to me this time too. Deut.9:20. And the Lord was very angry with Aaron and wanted to destroy him; but I also prayed for Aaron at that time. Deut.9:21. The sin that you committed - I took the calf, burned it in the fire, smashed it and ground it all down until it became as fine as dust, and I threw the dust into the stream flowing from the mountain. And when the Lord sent you from Kadesh-barnea, saying, Go and possess the land that I am giving you, you rebelled against the commandment of the Lord your God, and did not believe Him, and did not listen to His voice. And having prostrated myself before the Lord, I begged for forty days and forty nights, in which I prayed, for the Lord wanted to destroy you; Deut.9:26. and I prayed to the Lord and said: Sovereign Lord, [King of the gods], do not destroy Your people and Your inheritance, which You delivered by Your greatness [strength], which You brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand [and with Your outstretched arm]; Deut.9:27. remember Your servants, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, [to whom You swore by Yourself]; do not look at the bitterness of this people and at their wickedness and at their sins, Deut.9:28. so that [those living] in the land from which You brought us out would not say: “The Lord could not bring them into the land that He promised them, and, hating them, He brought them out to kill them in the wilderness.” Deut.9:29.
