A reminder to Israel of God's past benefits and an indication of those to come. – An exhortation to be grateful and obedient to God. Deut.8:3. He humbled you, made you hungry and fed you with manna, which you did not know and your fathers did not know, in order to show you that man does not live by bread alone, but by every [word] that comes from the mouth of the Lord; God “fed you with manna, which you did not know and your fathers did not know,” that is, the ancestors who lived before the people left Egypt, in order to show you that “man does not live by bread alone (growing in the natural order), but by everything that appears according to the word of the good and almighty Lord.” Deut.8:7. For the Lord your God is leading you into a good land, a land where streams of water and springs and lakes come out of valleys and mountains, Deut.8:8. to the land [where] there is wheat, barley, vines, fig trees and pomegranate trees, to the land where there are olive trees and honey, Deut.8:9. to a land in which you will eat your bread without want and will lack nothing, to a land in which the stones are iron, and from the mountains of which you will cut copper.
