Grateful remembrance of the miracles of God's goodness shown to Israel and voluntary fulfillment of the God-given law are an indispensable condition for the prosperity of the Jews in the land of promise. Deut.11:7. for your eyes have seen all the great works of the Lord that he has done. Many of the Jews, aged 50 years and above, could clearly remember the circumstances of the people’s exit from Egypt, and even more so the indignation of Korah and his accomplices (cf. however Deut. 2.14). Deut.11:10. For the land into which you are going to take possession of it is not like the land of Egypt, from which you came, where you, having sowed your seed, watered [it] with your feet, like an olive garden; The fertility of Egypt was determined by the hard work of artificial irrigation, through canals and ditches carrying water from the Nile River. The opening and closing of small ditches that irrigated private plantations was done in a primitive way - with feet, as is still done in some Asian countries. Deut.11:11. but the land into which you are moving to take possession of it is a land with mountains and valleys, and is filled with water from the rain of heaven, - Canaan has abundant natural irrigation through rain and springs that rise in the mountains and flow in the valleys. Deut.11:14. then I will give rain to your land in its season, the early and the late; and thou shalt gather in thy bread, and thy wine, and thy oil; The name “early rain” refers to autumn (at the beginning of the Jewish civil year) rain necessary for germination; under the name “the rain is late” - spring, promoting the pouring of grain and fruits. Deut.11:29. When the Lord your God brings you into the land where you are going to take possession of it, then pronounce the blessing on Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal: Deut.11:30. Here they are beyond the Jordan, on the road towards sunset, in the land of the Canaanites, who live on the plain, opposite Gilgal, near the oak grove of Moreh. Wed. Deut. 27.12–26. Mount Gerizim is considered to be the one on the slope of which Shechem (Neapolis, Kabulus) was built, located near the ancient oak grove of More (Gen. 12.6). Mount Ebal rises on the northern side of the Valley of Shechem. "Against Gilgal" According to some commentators, the Gilgal mentioned in Deut. 11:30 must be distinguished from Gilgal, mentioned in Josh. 4:19–20, 5:9–10. You might be interested in:
