“As wax melts before the presence of fire, so let sinners perish before the presence of God” (Ps. 67:3) Have you listened to the meaning and power of these words, which are now spoken more than once in every service? I admit, I cannot pronounce them otherwise than with fear. For imagine that this desire for the destruction of sinners from the face of God came true: do you think that many of us would then remain unperished? – But, on the other hand, is it possible for what is proclaimed in the name of God not to come true? Sooner or later, sinners must perish; and if this destruction is postponed, then for no other reason than so that the number of those who perish may be reduced as much as possible. After this, it is clear what we sinners must do in order to avoid destruction: hurry to get out of the sinful state as soon as possible. Let the sin that destroyed us perish, and we will be saved. This is what the greatest number of sinners did: realizing the poisonousness of sin, they were healed of it through repentance and are now blissful in the kingdom of God.
