(Phil. 1, 8–14; Luke 5, 12–16) The leper fell down to the Lord, praying: “Lord! if you want, you can cleanse me” (Luke 5:12). The Lord said: “I want, cleanse yourself. And immediately the leprosy left him” (Luke 5:13). Likewise, any moral leprosy immediately goes away as soon as someone falls to the Lord with faith, repentance and confession - it truly goes away and loses all power over it. Why does leprosy sometimes come back again? This is why bodily illnesses return. They say to someone who has recovered: “Don’t eat this, don’t drink that, don’t go there.” He won’t listen and the disease will irritate him again. So it is in spiritual life. We must be sober, watchful, and pray: the disease is sinful and will not return. If you don’t listen to yourself, you allow yourself to see, hear, speak, and act everything indiscriminately, how can you not be irritated by sin and take power again? The Lord ordered the leper to fulfill everything according to the law. This is what it is: after confession, one must take the epithem and fulfill it correctly; it contains great protective power. But why does someone else say: a sinful habit has overcome me, I can’t control myself. Because either repentance and confession were incomplete, or after precautions he holds on weakly, or he lets himself into a whim. He wants to do everything without effort and self-coercion, and sometimes we dare from the enemy. Decide to stand until death and show it in action: you will see what strength there is in this. It is true that in every irresistible passion, the enemy takes possession of the soul, but this is not an excuse; for he will immediately run away as soon as you make, with God’s help, a turn inside.
