(Rom. 6, 11–17; Matt. 8, 14–23) To one of those who wanted to follow the Lord, He said: “The Son of Man has no place to lay his head” (Matthew 8:20), and to another, who wanted to bury his father first, He said: leave him dead; others will bury him, but you follow Me. This means that whoever wants to follow the Lord should not expect any consolation from this following on earth, but only hardships, needs and sorrows, and that everyday concerns, even the most legitimate ones, are not compatible with this following. It is necessary to resolutely renounce everything, so that nothing binds you to the earth; then condemn yourself to all-round suffering or the cross, and thus equip yourself to follow the Lord. This is the direct will of the Lord! But to whom is this commandment—only the apostles or all Christians? Judge for yourself. Is everyone told to deny themselves and take up the cross? Then to love the Lord more than father and mother, brothers and sisters, wife and children - has everyone been told? The conclusion is clear. How can this be?
