(Rom.2:10–16; Matt.4:18–23) The Lord called Peter and Andrew, and they immediately left everything and followed Him. He called James and John, and they also immediately left everything and followed the Lord. Why did they go so quickly and willingly? Because they saw the best. Such is the law in our souls that, having learned and tasted the best, it turns away from the worst and abandons it. Here the same thing happens that the Lord later depicted in the parable about a treasure hidden in a village and about valuable beads. This treasure and pearls are faith in the Lord and communication with Him through the power of faith. We are called owners of this even in baptism. Why do we value such a treasure so little and, valuing it little, exchange it for wasteland? Because during our upbringing we are not introduced to the taste of this treasure, and it becomes alien to our heart. Our hearts don't know any better. It only knows which of the less good is bad and which is the greater, and bases its view on this. This is the whole reason why the Lord calls others and they go, but we, the called ones, run from Him. You might be interested in:
