(Acts 25:13–19; John 16:23–33) “Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name, he will give it to you” (John 16:23), said the Lord, and with further confirmation: “Truly, truly, I say to you.” What a shame for us that we do not know how to use such a false promise! And it would be good if only we were ashamed of it; otherwise a shadow is cast over the promise itself, as if it were too great and unfulfillable. No, the blame is entirely on us, and mainly in the fact that we do not recognize ourselves as faithful servants of Christ, and our conscience does not allow us to expect any mercy from the Lord. Moreover, it also happens that if sometimes someone begins to ask God for something, it is with a divided soul: he will mention it in passing in his prayer once or twice - and gives it up, and then says: “God does not hear.” No, when asking for something in particular, one must remain persistent and tireless in prayer, like the widow who, by her pestering, forced the heartless judge to grant her request. Real prayer books, asking for something in prayer, combine with prayer fasting, vigils, deprivation of all kinds and any kind of charity, and moreover, they ask not for a day, not two, but months and years; but they get it.
