Hymn No. 1 of our Holy Father Simeon is a mystical prayer in which he calls on the Holy Spirit, contemplating Him 1.
Come, hidden sacrament!
Come, nameless treasure!
Come, ineffable power!
Come, incomprehensible face!
Come, unceasing rejoicing!
Come, true hope of all who strive for salvation!
Come, lying awakening!
Come, awakening of the dead!
Come, powerful one, always creating, transforming and changing everything with one movement of the will!
Come, invisible, completely intangible and unknown!
Come, always remaining motionless and (at the same time) constantly moving, and coming to us lying in hell - You, Who are above all heavens!
Come, the name is always desired and repeated everywhere, although it is completely impossible for us to say who You are, and to find out what You are like or where You come from!
Come, unfading crown!
Come, purple of our great God and King!
Come, belt crystal-shaped and studded with precious stones!
Come, unapproachable foot 2!
Come, royal purple and truly autocratic right hand!
Come, You, Whom my unfortunate soul has loved and loves!
Come One to One, for I am alone, as You see!
Come, you who separated me from everyone and made me lonely on earth!
Come, You yourself became an attraction in me and made me yearn for You, who are completely inaccessible!
Come, my breath and life!
Come, consolation of my humble soul!
Come, joy and glory and my constant delight!
I thank You that You, the God who exists above all, became one spirit with me, unmerged, immutable, unchangeable, and You Yourself became everything in everything for me: ineffable food and received freely, constantly overflowing the lips of my soul and rapidly flowing in the source of my heart, shining clothing and scorching demons, purification washing me with the immortal and holy tears that Your presence bestows. to those to whom You come.
I thank You that You have become for me a non-evening light and a sacred sun - You, Who cannot hide anywhere and fill everything with Your glory. For You have never hidden from anyone, but we are always hiding from You, not wanting to come to You. And where will You hide, having no place for Your rest anywhere? Or why would You hide, not turning away from anyone, not despising anyone?
So, now dwell in me, O Master, and dwell and abide in me, Thy servant, inseparably and inseparably until death, O Good One, so that I, both during my exodus (from life) and after my exodus, may abide in You, O Good One, and reign with You, Who is God above all.
Stay, Master, and do not leave me alone, so that my enemies, always striving to devour my soul, come and find You abiding in me, run away, and so that they become powerless against me, seeing that You, the Almighty, live inside (life), in the house of my humble soul.
Yes, Master! Just as You remembered me when I lived in the world, and You Yourself chose me when I (still) did not know You, separating me from the world and placing me in the face of Your glory, so now, dwelling in me, keep me always standing inside and motionless. So that by constantly seeing You, I - dead - lived, and having You, I - always poor - was rich and became richer than all the kings, and eating and drinking You, and hourly putting on You, enjoyed unspeakable blessings.
For You are all good, and all glory, and all sweetness, and glory befits You - the Holy, Consubstantial and Life-Giving Trinity, Whom all the faithful in the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit honor and know, Whom they worship and serve always, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
Hymn No. 2 Who is a monk, and what is his work, and to what height of contemplation has this (holy father) ascended 3
A monk is one who is not involved in the world 4,
Who always speaks to God alone,
Who, seeing God, becomes visible himself,
Loving Him, he is loved by Him
And, becoming light, it always shines.
The monk is praised - he is still a beggar,
They invite him into the house - he is still a wanderer.
Oh wonderful, unthinkable miracle!
Among the immeasurable riches - I need,
Owning a lot, I remain poor,
Among the abundance of waters, I am thirsty.
Who will give me what I already have?
And where will I find Him Whom I see?
How can I hold the One who breathes in my heart 5,
But outside of everything, the Invisible One abides?
Have ears to hear - let him hear 6,
Hearing the words of a madman with trepidation! 7
Hymn No. 3 Teaching to monks who have recently renounced the world and what is in the world; and also about what kind of faith one should have in relation to one’s (spiritual) father (4:19) 8
Leave the whole world and what is in the world,
Just accept the blessed cry,
Weep over your evil deeds,
Christ the Creator and all the saints.
You're talking about nothing else: forget it
About the body as something alien,
And looking down like a condemned man,
Always sigh from your heart.
Don't stretch out your hands shamelessly
After all, in this life you will not once
Try to tame your tongue,
After all, he is very prone to sin
He brought down very great people,
But if you want to master it,
Try never to listen
Just listen to the instructions
Spiritual Father. Like God
And don't hide your bad desires.
Don't you dare sleep, eat or drink,
When you have accomplished all this,
Do not imagine that you accomplished the feat:
Even though you sowed in labor and sweat,
Don't flatter yourself and don't think
That you deserve fame
Having washed them from all filth,
To see and hear everything spiritually,
Until you started to change
Entirely with your feelings.
That which makes the tongue go numb,
Before which all words pale.
Hearing spiritually is a miracle
Who became like this, about the needs of the flesh
He walks lightly on the ground,
As if by air. Always
He sees everything to the very abysses,
And, struck with fear, God
He worships and glorifies.
Know the power of the Creator
Not everyone is capable
Although many people think they know
They are about him, but believe me -
Who is enlightened by heavenly light,
Remaining in complete ignorance,
O all Creator, Lord and God!
You, who created me from the earth
Living and mortal being,
Honoring a mortal with immortality,
You who gave me the ability
Live, talk, move
And glorify You, the Creator,
You Yourself, Lord of all and God,
Let me, the unfortunate one, ask
No matter how I came into this world,
The essence of nothing earthly objects.
I can't say oh God
What is my vision, and what is
This is a sound judgment.
Yesterday I came into this world
And I remember that I will always be here.
I tell everyone that You are my God,
However, every day with business
I teach that You are the Creator of everything,
You reign over the whole earth,
I'm trying to resist you.
But I, powerless and unhappy,
Reject all soul vices,
Empty pride and arrogance.
Give me a helping hand, Master,
Give me tears of repentance.
Give me saving tears,
What is always desired for the soul,
That they show me light again,
eager to see you -
Light of the world, Light of my eyes -
That wash away the filth of the heart,
In which there are many vices,
In which sorrow and hostility
To those who arranged for me to link 9,
It would be better to say - to the gentlemen,
Repay them for their evil, O my Christ,
Rich eternal consolation,
To everyone who longs for You with their souls,
Hymn No. 4 Alphabet in couplets, encouraging and instructing one who has recently retired from the world on the path to perfection of life (5:18) 10
Starting with ardent faith,
Always withdraw from the world with Christ 11.
Avoid friends, don’t meet relatives,
After all, this is useful for beginners.
Having lost the earthly, come to the Unearthly:
No one but God will help you.
Having rejected all timidity and cowardice
(After all, you have approached Almighty God),
Having hope entirely in God
(Who even takes care of the birds 12),
Bear the light yoke of the Lord 13,
Remembering the future great reward.
That yoke freely saves us from death,
After all, we are all saved by divine blood,
Makes us gods by the power of God -
And this is the fruit of the Lord’s incarnation, -
So that by doing you know the end of all affairs -
The One who is above all visible creation.
It is useful for you to cut off your will -
Through this you will become a witness of conscience.
Carry out your father's commands -
They will guide you to the right path;
Even though death threatens, don’t you dare argue:
The height of obedience is very great,
But God did this for you too 15.
Consider yourself the worst of all and the last -
And you will be the first in the Kingdom of Heaven 16.
Consider yourself a wanderer, a beggar, a servant -
And you will become great if you do this.
You will be an imitator of the Lord -
What could be higher than this in life?
Anyone can be corrected by this daily cry -
It is better than water and healthier than food.
He teaches the knowledge of truth:
Of what passes and what remains, -
But first he removes everyone from the world.
Live in silence, preserving this:
It cuts off barren roots.
And always have the memory of death:
She teaches holy humility.
Having purified the heart, enlightened the mind -
Oh the miracle that the faithful are looking for! –
You will be worthy to see the divine light,
Like an immaterial ray sent by God.
Christ shows us the perfection of love -
Whoever possesses it becomes a god.
Those who seek Christ, Christ enlightens them.
They are only alive - don’t be deceived by anyone!
O God's love, which creates gods!
She is God Himself 17 – this is amazing! –
It is not easy and difficult to find.
Hymn No. 5 Quatrains about the love of God (6:5) 18
How do you get rid of decay?
How do you bring people out of the abyss?
How do You draw darkness to dawn?
How do you hold the night with your hand?
How did you join mortals?
How you pierce the heart without arrows,
How you tolerate us, how you forgive us,
Outside of everything, how do you stay?
How will you announce everyone’s actions? 19
Give your servants patience
So that their sorrows do not overwhelm them! 20
Hymn No. 6 Prayer to God. And how (Saint Simeon), uniting with God and seeing the glory of God, came into amazement (7:49) 21
I worship You inside and see You in the distance,
I see You in myself and I contemplate You in heaven!
But how does this come? You're the only one who knows
Shining in the heart like the sun, in the earthly - unearthly.
O God, who illuminated me with the radiance of glory,
He led me to the all-holy Father Simeon 22,
To Thy servant and apostle, Shine upon me Thyself
And by the Holy Spirit teach me to sing hymns to him
Heavenly, secret, new, ancient, God! 23
So that through me everyone will be amazed at the wisdom of God
And so that Your wisdom may be glorified even more,
And when everyone heard it, they praised You, O my Christ,
For I speak in other tongues in grace.
Amen, and may it be done according to Your will, O my Lord!
I am sick and suffer with a humble soul,
When Your light appears in her, shining brightly,
Love for me becomes constant pain 24,
The soul suffers and cries because it cannot
I want to hug you and be satisfied, I wish so much.
But since I see You, that’s enough for me,
This will be my glory and happiness and royal crown
Above everything that is desirable and sweet in the world.
It will show the angels of God like me,
Or maybe he will make them big, O my Master!
After all, you are essentially invisible to the disembodied,
After all, You are unapproachable by nature, but I see You,
And the essence of Your nature mixed with me,
And both of them abide inseparably in You:
Nature is Your essence, just as essence is nature 25.
Having tasted Your flesh, I partake of Your nature 26,
This means that I partake of Your essence, O God,
Being an heir of God and a companion of God.
And, being in the flesh, appearing above the incorporeal,
I remember that I am becoming Your son, as You said,
Not disembodied spirits, but calling us gods.
“I said: you are gods, you are all sons of the Most High 27.”
You are God by nature, but you became a man 28,
Both remain unchanged, unfused.
I am mortal and perishable, but You made me a god,
As I accepted your son and bestowed Your grace,
He sent me the Holy Spirit and, like God Almighty,
Nature and essence mysteriously merged into one 29.
Hymn No. 7 That he who has become a partaker of the Holy Spirit, delighted by His light, rises above all passions, suffering no harm from their approach (9:29) 30
O God and Lord Almighty!
Can anyone get enough?
Your immensity, O God,
Can anyone be filled?
Will anyone see, Lord,
In all Your commandments?
In this scary and gloomy world,
To be carried away with the body from the world.
O terrible, wonderful secret!
Who, having surpassed the darkness of decay,
Left the whole world and disappeared? 31
Oh, how easy knowledge is!
How poor are all earthly words!
For where did that man hide?
Who, having passed through this world, was carried away
Beyond everything we see?
Say, O wisdom of all the wise,
Turned by God into madness,
As Paul tells us all 32
This “man of spiritual desires” 33,
Approaching body to body,
For outside these bodies, outside the world
There is no desire for carnal passion,
But there is a certain dispassion.
Whoever loves this dispassion,
Through love he receives life.
That he behaves unworthy
And he resorts to strange things 34,
Know that this is an earthly body
He made him completely dead -
What moves the body
But without the evil lusts of the flesh.
And the sweetness of holy dispassion
And the light emanating from him
That loves me unspeakably
Bringing my mind into a frenzy,
Naked by an invisible hand,
Fall away from love for this world
And think about something passionately,
But he kisses me incessantly.
And I have no other feeling.
How clean and fresh is the bread?
Everything heavenly is higher than earthly
Be ashamed, wisdom of all sages,
Deprived of true knowledge,
The simplicity of our words in practice
True wisdom contains
What is close to living God,
Continually worshiping Him,
From whom is the wisdom of life given?
And through this wisdom I
I am reborn and become a god 35,
Hymn No. 8 About the fact that death, unfortunately, also affects the very strong (10:57) 36
Hearing the sad news, I am horrified!
Nature is like solid stone,
Nature, which is stronger than granite, has perished! 37
Who lived without fear of fire or iron,
Became like wax, woven with metal 38,
I believe now that even a small drop
Gradually he hollows out a hole in the rock.
Oh, nothing is constant in life!
And woe to him who looks at perishable things,
Trying to hold on to fleeting benefits
And they can always be enjoyed on earth.
He will be convinced of this through bitter experience,
Of which I was convinced, unhappy and pathetic.
Alas, I was separated from my sweetest brother,
After all, the night interrupted the indivisible light of love!
Hymn No. 9 Here the father talks in amazement about how he saw God, like the apostles Paul and Stephen (11:32) 39
What new miracle is happening now?
God even now wants to be visible to sinners -
He Who once, having hidden himself, ascended above the sky
And he sat down on the throne of heaven and the Father.
For He was hidden from the sight of all the apostles of God,
And subsequently only Stefan, as we know,
I saw heaven open and said: “I see the Son,
What stands at the right hand of the most divine glory.”
And the lawyers immediately put the saint to death:
He was stoned for having uttered blasphemy 40.
By nature 41 he died, but he lives forever.
But he was an apostle, he was sanctified by God,
He was completely filled with the Holy Spirit,
And besides, all this was at the very beginning
Christian community: through the apostles the word
Those who lived without faith came to Christ,
Together with faith, you receive grace abundantly.
What does this strange thing mean today?
This is a terrible miracle, what is happening in me?
O love for man, which has now appeared to me!
O immeasurable goodness, source of mercy,
Even more complete than they poured out then!
For many people were saved by God,
But they either brought faith from themselves,
Or they showed zeal in good deeds.
I am a sinner, devoid of both deeds and faith,
Prodigal from birth, I tremble and am horrified.
I cannot bear what God shows me,
With the word of power he created all earthly creations.
I’m afraid to think, how can I express it in words?
How can a hand describe everything or a cane draw it?
As the word will tell, as my tongue will tell,
How the mouth will utter everything that I see today,
What is constantly happening in me all day long?
In the middle of the deep night, in the midst of hopeless darkness
I contemplate Christ with amazement and fear.
Opening the heavens, He descends from there,
Appearing to me with the Father and the Divine Spirit.
He is one, but in three Persons, Three in total unity,
Trisagion radiance in three Divine suns.
He illuminates the soul brighter than the earthly sun,
He enlightens my darkened mind with light.
If my mind were clear, it would always see
But believe me, I was blind - and I didn’t see at all.
Therefore, this miracle leads to amazement,
For He opens my intelligent eyes,
He restores my sight and allows me to see Himself.
To those who see He comes as light among light,
In the luminous radiance everyone contemplates Him.
For those who see see in the light of the Holy Spirit,
He who has seen the Spirit also beholds the Son,
And he who has seen the Son contemplates the Father 42,
And the Father and the Son contemplate together.
All this, as I said, happens to me.
An unspeakable miracle I barely understand.
In the distance, contemplating the beauty that is invisible
Because of the bright light of blinding glory,
I am greatly amazed, overwhelmed with fear,
However, I see only a drop from the boundless sea.
But just as a drop reveals the wholeness of all water
(What are its properties and what does the liquid look like),
Just as we imagine the entire fabric along the edge of a garment,
As, according to the proverb, “you can see the beast by its claws,”
So, when I contemplate, I see the whole in the small
And I worship Him - Christ God Himself.
It served as a kind of relief for the mind
The fact that I was far away from the fire,
So as not to be scorched and completely burned,
So that, like wax, it does not melt from fire, according to the prophet 43.
I stood in the darkness, completely shrouded in darkness,
As if looking through a hole, my head didn’t spin.
Staying in this darkness, occupying my mind with it,
But hoping, however, that I am looking at the sky,
And not daring to approach the fire out of fear,
Suddenly I found Him whom I saw in the distance,
Whom Stefan saw in the sky, I met.
whom Paul saw and was blinded, 44 I found,
Like an unspeakable fire burning in the depths of the heart.
Trembling, horrified, I went into a frenzy
And I could not bear the unbearable fame
On this night of unspeakable and strange sensations.
Having become helpless and weak, I took flight:
Hidden in various thoughts, I settled in a coffin;
Having rolled this heavy body 45 instead of a stone,
I covered myself and hid in my thoughts from God -
From the One who once found me dead
And buried in a coffin, he resurrected my soul.
I was unable to see the unapproachable glory,
That's why I preferred to go down into the coffin
Dwell among the dead, staying in the grave,
By being scorched by fire, you will perish completely.
Sitting there, it behooves me to weep unceasingly
And always cry about that, beloved God
Having lost, I found myself lying in the grave.
But, living underground, like a buried dead man,
I found life, and I found God the Giver of Life.
And to Him belongs unceasing glory,
Worship now and always and forever.
Hymn No. 10 Thanks be to God for the gifts that (Saint Simeon) received from Him. And that the abbess and the priesthood are scary even for angels (14:30) 46
I would like to speak, O Master, but I am unable to.
And what dare I say, defiled and unclean
In deeds and ideas and thoughts of all kinds?
However, I am wounded in my soul, I am burning inside,
Wanting to say something about You, O my Master.
But I see all of myself, and You, my God, know
That I have corrupted all parts of souls and bodies with sins,
Having become completely a sin from birth.
Looking at Your love and mercy towards man,
For the good that You did for me every day,
I lose my voice and fall into despair,
I grieve and constantly lament, unfortunate one,
That I am unworthy of all Your heavenly blessings.
When, having come to my senses, I want to think with my mind
About the multitude of my sins, Christ, and evil deeds,
About the fact that I have not done anything good in my life,
But instead of punishment and righteous anger,
Which I must bear, having despised you,
You have now honored me with such great blessings,
I despair again and imagine Your judgment,
After all, every day and hour I add sins to sins.
I fear that Your mercy and condescension
They did not cause me great punishments,
After all, while receiving benefits, I remain ungrateful,
Like a wicked servant 47 with You, the all-generous Master.
Therefore, to everything that gave me patience,
Everything that gave me hope of eternal life,
I rejoiced greatly, as you alone know
Hoping in Your love and grace, Master.
For this, Christ, You took me from the world,
Having separated all acquaintances from relatives and brothers,
To give me pardon, to grant me salvation.
Filled with your grace, I had
And insatiable joy and firm hope.
I don’t know what to say about these two gifts of Yours.
They deprive both the mind and the soul, O my King, of words,
Stopping all actions and thoughts completely,
From the excess of fame I feel heaviness,
Wanting to renounce everything, O my Savior,
And talk about nothing and do nothing,
And don’t touch any of this at all.
In myself I am amazed, surprised and sad,
How, in the face of such unspeakable mysteries, did he agree?
Should I serve, unworthy, while celebrating the Liturgy?
Even angels cannot look at them without fear.
The prophets were afraid when they heard about the unsaid
Greatness, glory, immeasurable condescension.
Apostles, saints and martyrs
They cry out, they cry out that they are not worthy boldly
Tell about this to everyone who is in the world.
So how can I, lost as I am, prodigal as I am, unfortunate,
Have you assumed the abbess over my brothers?
How did you become a priest of the Most Divine Mysteries?
How did you become a servant of the Most Pure Heavenly Trinity?
When we place bread on the paten, pour wine into the cup
In the name of Your Flesh, Word, and Most Pure Blood,
Then You Yourself are there, O my God and the Word,
Bread becomes the Body, and wine becomes the Most Pure Blood,
By the influx of the Spirit of God and the power of the Master,
And we dare to touch the unapproachable God,
Living in a completely impregnable light 48
Not only for human and perishable nature,
But even for the disembodied intelligent angels of heaven.
And this is a supernatural action and deed,
Which I am appointed to do daily,
Inspires me to always think about death.
So, having left joy, I again fall into trepidation,
After all, I know that it’s impossible for me or everyone else
It is worthy to celebrate the Liturgy and, having flesh,
To lead the life of angels and even to be higher than the incorporeal ones, -
As the word reveals to us and the truth reveals,
To come closer to God than angels can,
For we touch with our hands and taste God,
They only stand before Him with great fear.
And the judgment of the brothers, whose shepherd I am appointed,
What kind of soul can bear? What kind of mind can
Test everyone's actions without judging them
And carry out all your service without relaxation,
At the same time, without falling into condemnation of the careless?
It seems to me that this is in no way possible for a human being!
So, I'm convinced that it would be much better
Become a student again, be obedient to the will of one 49,
Always serve him and then give an account for it,
Than the wills of many to obey and serve their morals,
Explore intentions, test their thoughts,
Delving deeply into all matters and thoughts,
After all, a trial awaits me, and I must answer for them,
Whom I was chosen to shepherd by God's will.
At that trial, everyone will answer for their actions:
For the good and evil I have done in this life,
And I alone will have to answer for everyone!
But how I want to be pardoned, and how can I be saved,
When I am insignificant even for one soul
Are you unable to demonstrate a saving deed?
Believe me, I don't have anything to say, because I didn't
No small deed, no great deed,
Which will save me from eternal fire.
O my loving and merciful Savior!
Oh, give me, unworthy, divine power,
So that I can shepherd the brothers entrusted to me wisely,
Leading them to the pastures of Your saving laws
And leading to the abodes of the Divine Kingdom
Saved, shining with wondrous beauty
Good and good deeds; there to bow honor them
To Your Holy and Unapproachable Throne.
Take me, unworthy, from the world,
Although I bear immeasurable wounds from sins!
And to the faces of Your chosen ones by some destinies
Me, a servant and a sinful slave, Master,
Then join my disciples together,
So that we all can see Your Divine glory.
Hymn No. 11 About the fact that the Divinity alone is desired and desired by nature, and for those who partake of it it becomes a communion of blessings. (16:7) 50
For every created entity?
Can't find it on earth
And somehow keep it to yourself?
Everything that He created in the world.
Love for Him torments me,
But how can I not see Him?
The Lord, as invisible,
And cry like a desperate man
Then all of Him appears to me
I marvel and am amazed again
To how, having opened the heavens,
And is it possible to ascend there?
Shining in a weak heart,
He kisses me 52 times in total,
With the most divine sweetness,
I am filled with bliss.
Like God's face of a loved one 53,
I, a sinner, become at that hour
And more than all the kings of the earth,
Than everything we see in the world -
The earth and what lives on it,
And the sky and everything in it.
Hymn No. 12 Teaching with theology, which speaks of the priesthood and dispassionate contemplation (19:38) 54
How can I express it in words?
Your mysterious destinies?
What is happening to us
How you despise, Master,
You don't blame me for falling
And you don’t impute evil deeds?
You give life and enlighten
Me since I fulfilled
Your commands, Savior.
And he vouchsafed me to stand
Before the throne of grace,
Before glory, power and greatness.
How you speak to me, despicable
And unworthy and powerless,
Words of glory and immortality?
Like a divine and pure light
All defiled by sins,
How You divinely shine
So they are from the defiled
Suddenly they turn into saints?
How You cleanse, Savior
Is my tongue foul and unclean?
How are you allowed to take communion?
Your holy Most Pure Flesh?
You always see me everywhere
Should I see you, oh my God?
Hands how to hold allowed
You, Lord Almighty,
Invisible to all heavenly powers,
Incomprehensible, unapproachable
Neither he nor any other mortal
Your Face, so as not to perish 55.
How, my Christ,
Incomprehensible, unspeakable,
Impregnable for the entire universe,
Taste and kiss and see?
Always having you in my heart,
Both having fun and being horrified 56,
Your love and mercy for people.
So what about the carnal, the blind,
Without feeling your illness,
And deprivation of all heavenly blessings,
It's crazy to say:
In the priesthood, if he
Doesn't have any tasty food
Doesn't shine with bright gold,
Not on the episcopal throne
Doesn’t he sit boldly?“ 57
O blindness! O misfortune!
Sitting at the terrible Supper,
And preferred some money 58,
Heavenly and incorruptible blessings
Earthly perishable riches,
Which of the people, having Christ,
Will need perishable goods
Earthly and fleeting life?
Who is the grace of the Holy Spirit
Constantly having it in my heart,
It will not become the home of the Trinity,
And soon he turns into a god?
Who has become completely god
And God's pristine glory,
Ineffable, unapproachable,
Who would be more brilliant?
anything in this short life,
Compared to the blessings of that life,
Which has no end or edge?
Oh, if you only knew the secrets of the depths,
Wouldn't you force me to do this?
Write and speak openly.
Trying to put into words
And trying to draw with a cane
What is impossible to imagine
Something that is indescribable to everyone.
Oh, if only you could see Christ
And through them he rose to the Father,
Then you would know what I'm saying
What I'm trying to talk about:
Which is higher than all glory and splendor,
Principalities, powers, possessions,
Power, earthly kingdom -
All the days of life with a pure heart
Most Pure Heavenly Trinity.
Don't talk about that body
Must be pure and dispassionate
Don't say what you don't know
But you better listen to what the Lord
Through the apostles he told us,
Fire-tongued saint 59,
Through the writings of Chrysostom 60,
61 speaks about this perfectly.
Listen to their words and you will know
What should a performer be like?
Holy Heavenly Liturgy,
Serving the God of the entire universe.
When you find out about this,
Don't flatter yourself, don't dare
And don't try to touch
And approach the Creator of the universe,
Which is unapproachable by nature.
After all, who has not renounced the world,
Who has not rejected everything in the world,
He did not kill earthly feelings.
Didn't conquer earthly addictions,
Having overcome the attraction to the world,
To earthly words, deeds, habits,
He who is blind and deaf has not become for the world,
However, without letting you into your heart
Features and images of objects,
But remaining like a stone,
Unfeeling and lifeless
Without remembering the sounds of speech,
Without understanding the meaning of words -
He won’t be able to bring it cleanly
To the one who is pure - the living God,
Bloodless, holy sacrifice.
Because having felt it all,
Having learned in practice, he, of course,
Will reject the world and everything in the world,
And he will believe everything I say.
Who crossed that dark air,
Which was called the wall
King David 62, and the Fathers
Called the “sea of life” 63,
Who enters the quiet harbor,
He finds a quiet pier,
For there is paradise, there is the tree of life 64,
There is sweet bread 65, living water 66,
The wealth of God's gifts.
Always burning - and not burning 67,
There the shoes immediately fall off your feet 68.
Seeing enemies dead in the water 69.
Which plunges into the heart,
70 transforms all bitterness into sweetness.
There I found a steep rock,
What honey always exudes to me 71,
There I found Christ the Master,
And I hurried after Him immediately.
There I ate manna - the bread of heaven 72,
I didn’t want to taste or see.
There I saw Aaron's rod,
That was dry, but blossomed,
But 73 blossomed again - and was surprised
I am the great miracles of God.
I saw fruit bearing again,
That it bears the most beautiful fruit.
There I saw a sinful heart
I am virgin and pure again,
And chaste and bright.
There I heard: “Rejoice forever,
For the Lord is always with you!” 74
There I heard “Go wash yourself,
Purify yourself in the pool of weeping” 75:
Having done this, I suddenly received my sight.
There, through complete humility
I buried myself in a coffin,
But Christ Himself, coming with love,
My sins are a heavy stone
Pushed away from the door of the coffin,
Telling me: “Get out of there -
From the world, as if from a cave!” 76
There I saw how dispassionately
My God and Redeemer suffered,
How he died, being immortal.
And how he rose, rose from the grave,
Without destroying the seals of the tomb 77.
There I saw a different life -
Which Christ the Savior
Granted to all who seek God.
There I found the Kingdom of God
Within yourself - the Father and the Son
And inseparable in three Persons.
But they are not worthy of pleasure,
And joy, and blessings, and glory
All those who are in front of the whole world
Creator and Lord of the universe,
Who was not considered a great honor
Just the worship of God
Service before His throne.
You will not partake of heavenly blessings
Until they taste the blessings of heaven,
What God commanded us.
Anyone, and then with fear,
He must touch God
When God Himself wants it.
Not everyone is worthy
But only the one who has grace
Who is clean from filth and vice.
Without permission from God,
It is impossible and extremely unreasonable
And touch the terrible Secrets,
Holy and inviolable
And honor and worship - now
Hymn No. 13 What a monk should be and what kind of work he should do, what kind of success and ascension (27:20) 78
Christ in the dwelling, the King of all,
Call upon Him, weep and weep,
Sigh, bend your knees,
As soon as you want, monk,
To remain a true monk.
Then you won't be alone 79
But at the same time, like us,
Like being separated from this world.
This is what a monk is all about!
Uniting with the Divine,
You are numbered with all the saints,
To live with the angels,
To be righteous with everyone,
So that everyone living in heaven
Become a joint heir forever.
So how can you be lonely?
Having received citizenship of heaven,
Where is the bright face of the martyrs,
Where is the cathedral of all saints,
Prophets, many saints
And other righteous people?
But if Christ lives in anyone,
So how can you say
After all, he abides with Christ
God the Father and the Holy Spirit Himself.
He who is connected to the Three
As if with one thing - answer me?
He who is with God is not alone,
Even if he were sitting in the desert
And the one who has not found God,
He is not a monk - woe is me! –
So we stay apart
We are separated from each other
It's like we live together
Seeing each other every day
In gatherings of many people.
After all, everyone was deprived by death
Your friends and relatives,
All those we love here.
And sleep, and night, and all things
But who through a righteous life
He turned the whole cell into the sky,
He contemplates, sitting in it,
He always lives with light
Neither during the day, nor at night, nor in a dream,
Not long on the road,
Not changing my place of residence.
But whether he is alive or dead, he
Lives with Him forever in soul.
How a husband and wife separate
To each other once and for all?
As He who gave the law - say -
Will he not obey the law?
Who once told people:
“And two shall become one flesh” 80 –
How He will not be with her forever
The wife is all in the husband - the husband is in the wife,
The soul is all in God - God is in the soul:
They accept the mind of Christ 81,
Always calling: O Lord,
O King, O Creator of all the earth!
Like the sun, for he lives in them
God's never-ending light 82,
What enlightens all people
There are 83 coming into the world, which shines for everyone
Born again of Him 84 .
There is no night in them. - But how can that be?
– I can’t tell you.
All those who serve God here,
Although there may be
Who are alone with Him and alone in Him,
Whose mind is strengthened in the light,
I don't know what else to compare it with.
But they all live in cells,
Like in the most luminous palaces,
They want to stay in heaven -
Cast aside doubts and believe!
But they live in the light of eternity,
In which the angelic cathedral
Faces of thrones and dominions,
Began, authorities and forces ranks 85.
Though the Lord lives in the saints,
They always live and move 86:
They will become gods, and always -
Oh miracle! - They will live with God,
After all, He is God by nature,
And He adopted them all 87.
Like prisoners in prison 88.
Slightly penetrating through the gap,
They can’t, after leaving prison,
They cannot breathe air 89.
All this saddens them here,
After all, to contemplate the whole Christ
At the same time, they cannot
The earthly body, at the same time
And from all earthly passions:
Who is a prisoner of many chains,
To be free to get out of them.
But we still only hold one,
He mourns more than others,
Trying to break that chain,
To be free forever,
To walk forever in joy,
To run quickly to Tom,
To whom I was so eager to escape from chains 90.
And be released from all bonds.
And makes my heart tremble,
Whose glory, lifting to love,
Linked forever with Him alone.
Friends! Let's rise quickly
To deceive ourselves.
How can one be saved without Him?
That God is invisible to people!
They cannot see His light,
There is no way to see that light 91.
Who thirsts for God with all his soul,
Who, living a holy life
For the rest, the dirt of sins
What here and here will separate them
And – don’t be deceived! - into the darkness
And he will send them to eternal fire.
Look, brothers, how beautiful
And how wonderful is our Lord!
Don't darken your mind
What gives us eternal life!
And let us all ascend with me -
Not with the corruptible body, but with the mind,
With a humble heart and soul -
Appealing to the good Lord,
And immediately he will give us mercy,
Appearing like a clear light.
Are you calling me idle and empty?
Do not flatter yourself, oh friends,
This is not so, not at all!
And wives, and brothers, and children,
Striving for money and honors,
So the one who repents himself
He must always try
And it led to perfection.
So, having become dear to the Lord,
Having completely merged with Him alone,
Face to face He sees Him 92
So may the Lord vouchsafe us
With all the righteous here,
As much as possible in this life,
After all, there is all of Christ, all
Hymn No. 14 On the mental revelation of the actions of the Divine light and on the mental and Divine doing of a pious life (28:21) 93
Leave me alone, imprisoned in a cell,
Let go with one humane God,
Leave everyone, go away, leave one alone
To die in the face of the God who created me!
No one knock on the door or raise a voice.
Friends and relatives, forget the way to me 94.
Nobody forcefully distract my soul
From the contemplation of the good and beautiful Lord.
Nobody give me food, don't bring me drink,
For it is enough for me to die before God -
A merciful God, a philanthropic God,
Those who came to earth to call and save sinners 95,
To bring them into divine life with Himself.
I don't want to see the light of this world anymore,
I don’t want to see what’s in the world, not even the sun itself.
For I see my Lord, I see the King -
The One who Himself is light 96 and the creator of all light,
I see the Source of all good, I see the Cause,
The Beginningless Beginning, From Which It Comes,
By which everything in the world is enlivened and nourished.
For by His will everything comes into existence,
Everything becomes visible at His wave,
By His will everything ends and disappears.
How can I, having left Him, leave my cell?
Leave me, I will cry inconsolably,
Mourn the days and nights I've lost,
When I looked at this world and this sun,
I looked at the sensual and dark light of this world.
For the light of this world does not enlighten the soul,
The blind live without it, living on earth,
But after death they will become like those who see now,
In this light, I, being seduced, always had fun,
And that there is another light - I never thought
But it is he who is life, he is the reason for being:
And what already exists, and what will happen later.
I was like an atheist, not knowing my God,
Now, when He, by ineffable mercy,
He wanted to become visible to me and opened up,
I saw and knew that He is truly the God of all -
God, Whom no one in this world has seen 97,
For He exists outside the world, outside darkness and light,
Beyond air and mind and all feeling,
That’s why I became higher than my feelings when I saw Him.
So allow me, you, subject to earthly feelings,
Not only lock the cell and stay inside,
But also dig a hole underground and hide in it.
Staying there constantly outside the whole world,
Seeing my immortal Creator and Lord,
I want to die of love, but I won’t die!
So how have I benefited from the world?
And what do those who live in the world now gain?
Truly nothing! But going to the grave naked,
They will be resurrected naked and condemned
Because, having left true life and the Light of the world,
Leaving Christ, I say, they loved darkness
And all those who did not accept the Light preferred to walk in it 98 -
The Light that shone indescribably in the world,
But the world cannot contain Him and cannot see Him.
So let me go, I beg you,
And leave me alone - to cry and seek God,
So that He would be abundantly given to me and appear.
After all, He is not only contemplated, being visible,
But it is taught, dwells and abides,
Being like a kind of treasure hidden in the depths 99.
He who carries it within himself rejoices unceasingly,
And whoever sees him rejoices exceedingly,
Thinking that everyone sees him, albeit hidden.
But it is invisible to everyone and inviolable:
A thief cannot take it away and a robber cannot steal 100,
Even if he killed the one who wears it.
If he wanted to take it away, he would have labored in vain,
If I searched my wallet, searched my clothes
And, trying to find him, he untied his belt.
Even ripping open the stomach and feeling the insides,
He wouldn't be able to find it and take it anyway.
For it is invisible, not held by hands,
Not tangible, but tangible it happens!
It happens to be held by the hands of the worthy -
All of you unworthy, get away from here! –
And it lies in the palm of your hand like something - lo and behold! –
But also as not something 101, for it has no name.
Being amazed and wanting to hold him,
I squeeze my hand and imagine that I have it,
But it slipped away, not held by hand!
Saddened, I unclenched my hands
And again I saw in her what I had seen in her before -
Oh strange mystery, oh unspeakable miracle!
Why do we rush about, deceiving ourselves in vain?
Why do we strive for this insensitive light,
Being illuminated by reason and intelligent feeling? 102
Why do we look at the material and perishable?
Having an immaterial immortal soul?
Why, insensitive, do we marvel at all this,
Preferring, like the blind, a large piece of iron
Or a pile of dough for a small gold bar
And the pearl of great price 103 as priceless things,
And we are not looking for a small mustard seed 104,
Which is more valuable than the entire visible world
And superior to invisible things and creatures?
Why don't we give everything we have for him?
Why do we want to live without acquiring it?
It is better, if possible, to die many times,
To acquire this small grain, believe me!
Woe to those who do not have it sown in their hearts,
For they will always hunger and thirst greatly!
Woe to those in whom it does not germinate in their souls,
For they will be naked, like trees without leaves!
Woe to those who do not believe the word of the Lord Jesus,
That it becomes a tree and puts forth branches!
Woe to those who do not try to preserve it through their minds
Return this little grain daily!
For all their lives they will labor in vain,
Like that slave who foolishly buried his talent in the ground 105:
I am one of these, living carelessly.
But, O inseparable and unmerged Unity! 106
O Trinity - Father, Son and Spirit - Trinitarian Light!
O beginningless Power and the Beginning of all beginnings,
The light is unnameable, completely nameless,
But at the same time it has many different names! 107
O Light that accomplishes everything, O one Glory,
O Beginning, Dominion, Power and Kingdom!
O Light, in which they merge into one
Desire, choice, will and strength!
Have mercy on me, have pity on me, the contrite one!
For no matter how much I grieve and lament,
When I see Your goodness, such mercy
Frivolously despised, foolish and pathetic,
Not wanting to fulfill Your commandments, O God?
But now have mercy, now have mercy on me
And kindle that warmth of my heart, my Christ,
Which the peace of my pitiful flesh extinguished,
Sleep, excess in wine, intemperance in food.
All this completely extinguished the flame of my soul
And the fountain that poured out tears dried up.
After all, warmth is fire, and fire gives birth to warmth,
And from both a flame ignites - a source of tears.
The flame gives birth to streams of tears, and the streams give birth to flames:
I've always been drawn to both
Fulfillment of Your divine commands,
Keeping the commandments along with repentance,
What puts me between the present and the future.
When I found myself outside of all visible things,
I was very frightened, seeing where I was torn from.
Seeing the future in the distance and wanting to catch,
I was kindled with the fire of love, and little by little
This fire inexplicably turned into a flame
At first only in my mind, then in my heart,
And the flame of love for God shed tears within me,
Delivering with them unspeakable sweetness.
So, when, confident that the flame will not go out,
Because it burns well, I forgot.
Madly enslaved to sleep and fullness of the womb
And allowing yourself to drink more wine,
Full, but, of course, not drunk to the point of drunkenness,
It immediately died out - oh, a terrible miracle! - love in the heart,
The flame that reached the heavens has gone out,
Which, although it burned very strongly inside,
Didn't burn a substance like hay in me,
Located in the depths of the soul, but - lo and behold! –
All this substance completely turned into flame,
And the hay, in contact with the fire, did not burn 108,
But rather the fire, engulfing the hay,
Connected with him, keeping him unharmed.
Oh the power of God's fire, oh the effect of a miracle!
Destroying rocks and mountains with fear alone
Thy Face 109, O Master, my Christ and God,
How You are completely mixed with the hay with the Divine essence,
Living in a completely unbearable light?
How, remaining unchanged and completely unapproachable,
You keep the substance of the hay unburnt
And, keeping it unchanged, you change everything,
So this hay is light, although light is not hay?
And You, Light, are united inseparably with the hay,
But hay is like light, changing without change.
I cannot cover up Your miracles in silence,
I cannot help but talk about Your condescension,
About what You did to me, the dissolute and the prodigal,
About Your love for people and about immeasurable wealth
I can’t help but tell everyone, O my Redeemer!
Because I want the whole world to draw from it
And so that no one remains deprived of it!
But first, O King of the universe, shine in me again,
Inhabit and enlighten my humble soul,
Show the face of Your Divinity to me clearly
And appear to me invisibly, O my God!
For all of You is not visible to me, although all of You appears;
Elusive, you want to be elusive to me,
Inconceivable for everyone, You become as if small
And in my hands and in my mouth, O God 110.
You are seen as a light-shaped nipple and sweetness,
Shining brightly and spinning, oh terrible mystery!
So give yourself to me now, so that I can be satisfied with you,
So that I kiss Your unspeakable glory,
So that I may kiss the light of Your face, O God,
And he was filled with them and passed them on to everyone else
And having died, he came to You, glorified entirely.
Having become light from Your light, I will appear to You
And then I will get rid of many of these disasters,
I will free myself from fear, so as not to change anymore.
Yes, give it to me, Master, yes, give it to me,
After all, You gave everything else to me, unworthy, for free,
But this is what is most needed - this is the only thing needed!
For, although even now You appear to me, Master,
Although even now You are so merciful to me,
And you enlighten me and mysteriously teach me,
And You cover and protect with Your strong hand 111,
And you are present and you drive away demons,
And you submit everything to me, and you leave everything to me,
And fill you with all good things, O my God,
But it won't do me any good
If you don't let me pass through the gates of death without shame,
If the prince of darkness does not see Your glory when he comes,
With me, and will not be ashamed, the gloomy one,
And will not be scorched by Your unapproachable light,
And with him all the nasty forces of hell
They will not run away when they see the sign of Your seal 112 on me,
I will not cross, hoping for Your goodness,
Without trembling, I will not approach You, crouching,
Then what is the benefit to me from everything that happens in me?
No! but it will light a stronger fire for me.
Hoping to partake of Your blessings and glory
And become Your servant and friend, O my Christ,
I can lose everything at once and you myself.
How will this sorrow not be much worse for me,
Than for the infidels who have not known You
And they did not see Your shining light
And are you not satisfied with Your unspeakable sweetness?
If I have to get this deposit,
Receive those awards and honors, O Savior,
Which You promised to those who believed in You,
Then I too will be blessed, I will praise You -
Father and Son and Holy Spirit,
One truly God forever!
Hymn No. 15 That all the saints, being illumined, are enlightened and see the glory of God, as far as it is possible for human nature to see God (35:16) 113
Look from above, my God,
Show me, O God, Your light,
Open up the sky before me,
Come inside me now!
Speak as before, God,
Through my defiled tongue,
Against those who claim
Who would reasonably see God,
Only the apostles of the Lord.
No one has ever seen 114.
So answer quickly, my Christ,
“Write down,” He said immediately, “
Before days, times, centuries,
And the spiritual of all creatures 115.
Above all ideas
I was alone with One,
(Neither physical nor spiritual 116).
I was before I was born 117,
The essence of God and nature,
Lord of all and Creator of all,
Just a small glimmer of light
Only a ray of heavenly glory -
Like a mirror in which
Like a precious stone
Illuminated by the sun at noon,
Ray of Divine brilliance.
And none of the disembodied forces.
I remain invisible to everyone.
As if I'm not so beautiful 118,
Because there are no worthy ones
To become equal to the Creator -
But, however, those who see
Even a small glimmer of light
And that I brought them to life.
So that God created nature,
After all, it’s impossible for creation
Equal to the Uncreated?
Then admit that the creatures
Beginningless and Uncreated –
From the one who made them.
Know who rules it
Understand who is driving it 119,
If the master doesn’t invest in them
Sight, knowledge, understanding,
For creatures like them?
To give life to someone
Or the life-giving spirit 120.
Only the Lord, the Source of life,
And He gives to all creatures,
Like an Artist, like a Lord,
Hymn No. 16 Expressing gratitude for God's gifts. And how the father writing this experienced the actions of the Holy Spirit and the teaching spoken from the person of God about what must be done to receive the salvation of those who save (40:13) 121
Again the light shines clearly for me, again I see it,
He opens the heavens and destroys the night,
He appears to me again, I contemplate him.
He places me outside everything that is visible and visible,
And it separates from what is perceptible by feeling.
Again the Highest of all heavens, the Greatest of all the universe,
Whom no one 122 of earth-born has ever seen,
Without opening the skies, without dispersing the night,
Without tearing the air and without dismantling the roof,
All remain with me, both weak and pitiful,
Inside my home, inside my mind and heart.
Oh, a terrible miracle! When everything remains as is,
Light descends from heaven to me and lifts me above all:
I, being among everything, was suddenly placed outside of everything,
I don’t know - in the body or not 123 - but there I remain,
Where one simple light shines, which is contemplating
I, too, become simple, gentle and meek.
So unusual are all the works of Your miracles, my Christ,
This is how Your power works, love and compassion,
What do You pour out on us, wholly unworthy.
That is why fear takes hold of me and I tremble,
And I am always worried and deeply saddened
About the fact that there is nothing to reward me with and nothing to repay me with
For such great gifts of love and mercy,
For such immeasurable gifts that You poured out on me.
Not finding anything in myself and realizing,
That in this life I have nothing of my own,
But everything must serve You, everything is the creation of Your hands,
I am also more ashamed, tormented, O Savior,
And wanting to know what I should do, what I should do in order to be saved.
To serve and please You, O my Savior,
So that on the day of judgment I may appear before You uncondemned 124.
“Listen to everyone who truly desires to be saved,
And first of all, listen to me, who asked me about this!
Consider that now you have died, that now you have renounced,
That you left this world completely today,
Leaving relatives, friends and vain glory,
Give up concern for earthly and base things,
Place your cross on your shoulders 125 and tie it tighter,
And endure the toil of all temptations to the end,
The diseases of all sorrows and the nails of all sorrows,
Bear all this with joy, like a crown of glory.
Always pierced through and through with the blades of dishonor
And stoned in the days of insults,
Shedding a stream of bloody tears, you will become a martyr,
And, gratefully enduring ridicule and blows.
You will be involved in My Divinity and glory.
When will you prove yourself to be the last of all people?
And a slave to all, and a servant to all, just as I promised,
I will place you first among all those living in the world 126.
When you love all the enemies who wish you harm,
You will always pray for those who hate you
And you will do good to those who offend you according to your strength,
Then you will become completely like the Almighty Father 127
And having acquired a pure heart, you will see God in it 128,
Who has never been seen by any 129 earth-born!
When you are worthy to endure persecution for the sake of truth,
Then rejoice and be merry - after all, the Kingdom has become yours 130.
What could be higher? So do it all
And try to do everything that I commanded,
And always teach the same to those who believe in Me -
And you will be saved and be with Me forever!
And whoever has denied Me and My laws,
And who considers himself a disgrace and dishonor
To suffer and lay down your soul for the commandments of God,
Why do you strive to find out how you need to be saved?
And how can you become friends with Me?
Why do you call Me Lord in vain? 131
Why do you consider yourself to believe in God?
After all, for your sake I endured all this voluntarily:
He was crucified, died on the cross, and was numbered among the villains 132.
But all My sufferings and all that I have endured,
For the world they have become forever greatness and glory,
Radiance, life without end and the resurrection of the dead;
For all who believe in Me, they have become praise.
My most shameful death saved the faithful from death,
Having become the garment of immortality, the garment of deification.
So, who in life imitated My honest sufferings,
Those of My Deity will all become partakers,
They will be the heirs of My holy kingdom,
You will fully partake of heavenly unspeakable blessings,
They will remain with Me forever and ever.”
For the rest, who among us will not cry bitterly?
Who wouldn’t shed tears for them out of heartfelt pity?
The insensitivity of people who will not mourn mournfully?
After all, all of them, leaving life, breaking away from God,
They are dooming themselves to death in a terrible way!
Deliver me from such a fate, Lord of the universe,
And introduce me to Your immaculate sufferings,
So that I, the last of all, can join in the glory,
And to the enjoyment of Your blessings, as You Yourself said, O God,
So that I know You now at least in part,
Like through a glass darkly, guessingly, incompletely,
Then I fully knew how I was known by You! 133
This prayer, unlike other hymns, is written in prose.
The hymn is written in twelve-syllable iambic trimeter. Here and below, the first number in brackets after the title of the anthem means its serial number according to the Sources Chretiennes publication; the second digit, after the semicolon, means the serial number of the hymn in the Russian translation by Hieronymus. Panteleimon (Sergiev Posad, 1917).
Lit. “not mixed with the world.”
Lit. “The One who is within me.”
Lit. “correctly understanding the words of the illiterate.” Calling himself agrammatos (illiterate, ignorant, ignorant), Rev. Simeon emphasizes his non-involvement in “external” (worldly) learning.
The hymn is written in twelve-syllable iambic trimeter.
Lit. “to those who staged the drama (performance) with my expulsion.” We are talking about Stephen of Nicomedia and others who achieved the expulsion of St. Simeon from the monastery of St. Mamasa and his exile in Chrysopolis.
Written in twelve-syllable iambic trimeter, the present hymn consists of 24 couplets, in which the first verse belongs to Simeon, and the second is supplemented by one of his students (possibly Nikita). The alphabetic acrostic is a very common phenomenon in Byzantine poetry. The alphabet was understood by the ancient Greeks and Byzantines as a symbol of a comprehensive harmonious whole. “Alphabet” Rev. Simeon is like a “ladder” of spiritual ascent, consisting of 24 steps. Wed. thirty-step “ladder” by Rev. John of Sinai.
Lit. “Having Christ as your beginning and ardent faith, so depart from the world.”
Those. Jesus Christ, God incarnate, for the sake of man Himself followed the path of obedience to the will of His Father. Wed. Phil. 2:8.
The meter of the hymn is a syllabic-tonic anacreontic octosyllabic. The hymn contains rhymes (blyzon – drosizon, exafanizeis – exafthartizeis) and homeotelevts (elkeis – perilampeis – metaballeis). The anthem is translated in original size.
Lit. “How do you see everyone doing?”
Lit. “so that sorrow does not cover them.”
The hymn is written in fifteen-syllable tonic meter.
We are talking about Rev. Simeone Studite.
Lit. “new together and ancient, divine and hidden.” Rev. Simeon wrote hymns in honor of his spiritual father even before he was recognized as a saint. This was one of the charges brought against him by Stephen of Nicomedia. See Vie 72–73.
Lit. “love (pothos) is called pain (ponos) by me and is such.”
Rev. Simeon uses the classical theological terms ousia (essence) and fysis (nature) to mean identical concepts.
Wed. 2 Pet. 1 (nature nature).
Some manuscripts contain a line missing from Patm.427 (14th century). Having restored it, we get the following text: “Glory to Your compassion and condescension, that, being God by nature, You became man.”
The hymn is written in twelve-syllable iambic trimeter. The central theme of the hymn is the doctrine of dispassion, revealed through the example of a certain “man of spiritual desires,” i.e., probably the Rev. Simeon Studite.
Lit. "Who crossed the barrier (wall) of his flesh? Who, having passed through the darkness of corruption and leaving the whole world, hid himself?" There is a scholia for this verse in the manuscript Marcianus 494 (13th century): “From here it becomes clear that the father himself who wrote this was caught up into heaven outside the body, as is told elsewhere” (SC 156, 23).
The expression “man of desires” is borrowed from the Old Testament (Dan. 10:19). In the liturgical hymns of the Eastern Church, this expression is found in relation to one or another saint. See, for example, the service of St. Nicholas (Menaion of the month for December 6; vespers; stichera on the stichera): “Man of God and faithful servant, servant of the Lord, man of desires...”
Lit. “Even if you saw that he was acting up and rushing to (strange) actions.”
Lit. “I am recreated and deified.”
The coder assumes that the hymn is dedicated to St. Simeon the Studite, who died around 986–987. However, since the hero of the anthem is called “the sweetest brother,” such an assumption seems unlikely. Rather, we may be talking about one of the monks, friends of St. Simeon the New Theologian. The hymn is written in twelve-syllable iambic trimeter.
Lit. “Nature immaterial, stronger than stone, equal to the so-called adamant, succumbed.”
Lit. “being intertwined with lead.” Does this expression indicate some kind of violent death (from a sword, from a knife)?
In this hymn, written in political fifteen-syllables, Rev. Simeon talks about one of his mystical visions of the Divine Light.
Lit. “according to the law of nature.”
Those. “according to the prophet (David).” Wed. Ps. 67:3.
Wed. Matt. 27:60. Commenting on this verse, Archbishop Vasily (Krivoshein) writes: “This is still the same theme of the weakness of human nature, unable to meet with God, reinforced by Plato’s idea of the body as a grave” (Venerable Simeon the New Theologian, p. 306).
As Coder notes, the hymn was written during the period of the abbess of St. Simeon in the monastery of St. Mamasa (see SC 156, p.75). The original size is a political fifteen-syllable.
Rev. Simeon remembers the time when he was a novice with Rev. Simeon Studite.
The anthem is written in political fifteen-syllables.
Rev. Simeon often uses “marriage” and “love” images to express feelings of fiery love for God, especially when describing the mystical union with God.
This expression (glory: “rejoicing together and trembling”) is found in the prayer “From vile lips,” included in the Follow-up to Holy Communion.
These words reflect the polemics of Rev. Simeon with one of his contemporaries who incorrectly judged the priesthood.
“It is difficult to indicate which text of St. Basil Simeon refers to: perhaps the Interpretation of the Prophet Isaiah, chapters 103 and 104” (SC 174, p.101).
St. John Chrysostom is the author of the 6th Sermon “On the Priesthood.”
“The Homily in which Gregory justifies his removal to Pontus” (Homily 3 of St. Gregory the Theologian) is devoted to the theme of the priesthood.
Wed. Ps. 17:30: “With my God I ascend the wall.” In the Slavic translation (“By my God I will cross the wall”), as well as in the Septuagint, we are talking about passing “through” the wall, about overcoming the wall as a kind of barrier.
The expression “sea of life” (slav. “sea of life”) is found in Origen, Basil the Great, John Chrysostom and other authors. However, Rev. Simeon here most likely has in mind the liturgical text: “The sea of life, raised up in vain by the storm of adversity...” (irmos of the canon, tone 6).
Wed. Life 2:8–9; Apoc. 2:7. From here begins a long series of allusions to biblical texts, in which Rev. Simeon finds a reflection of his inner experience.

Here and throughout the entire hymn, Rev. Simeon uses the cognates monachos (monk), monos (alone, lonely), monazon (lonely, solitary), monazo (solitary), memonomenos (isolated, separated). It is not always possible to convey this play on words in translation.
Life 2:24. Wed. Matt. 19:5.
According to the treatise “On the Heavenly Hierarchy,” attributed to Dionysius the Areopagite, all heavenly ethereal forces are divided into nine ranks: thrones, seraphim, cherubim, powers, powers, dominions, principles, archangels and angels.
Wed. Ps. 81:6; In. 10:34.
The idea of the body as a prison of the soul goes back to Plato (Cratylus 400 c).
Lit. “while looking out, they cannot look freely into the air.”
These lines formulate the main points of the Rev.'s polemics. Simeon with his opponents, who argued that: 1) it is impossible for a person to tangibly perceive the Holy Spirit in earthly life; 2) this is not necessary for salvation; 3) a person receives the grace of the Holy Spirit without realizing it; 4) seeing God in earthly life is impossible; 5) contemplation of the Divine Light is impossible.
Lit. “don’t visit me.”
Wed. In. 1:18; 1 Tim. 6:16.
