With the Bolsheviks coming to power, the educational process at the MDA gradually faded away, primarily due to lack of funds. By the end of 1917, Professor I.V. Popov wrote in the academic press: “At present, the academy is extremely constrained in its means of subsistence. We must say more sharply: we have nothing to live on.”300 By the end of 1918, the Higher Church Administration, “in view of the ever-increasing difficulties of life,” no longer “considered it advisable to resume training in one form or another at the academy” 301. “It was decided to attract professors to give public lectures on religious topics in Moscow and compile popular brochures as a counterweight to false teachers, in particular anti-religious ones” 302. At this time, Archimandrite Hilarion is named vice-rector of the MDA and serves as rector of the academy 303.
