This is the day that the Lord has made (Ps. 118:24). As we sang to our Lord, so, with His help, we will do. Although every day was created by the Lord, it is not without reason that it is written about a certain day in particular: This is the day that the Lord has made. We read: when God created heaven and earth, he said: let there be light: and there was light. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night (Gen. 1:3, 5). But there is another day, known to us and especially approved, that day about which the Apostle says: for in days let us walk gracefully. An ordinary, ever-present day is accomplished by the rising and setting of the sun, and on this other day the Word of God shines in the hearts of believers and drives away the darkness not from the eyes of the flesh, but from the soul, the darkness of evil morals. We will honor this day, on this day we will rejoice. Let us heed the words of St. Apostle: For you are all sons of light and sons of the day, unbearable nights, lower than darkness (1 Thess. 5:5); for in the days let us walk in good manners, not in wickedness and drunkenness, not in fornication and sexual immorality, not in zeal and envy: but put on our Lord Jesus Christ, and do not please the flesh in lust (Rom. 13:13, 14). If you follow this rule, then you sing with all your heart: this is the day the Lord has made. – For what you sing is what you become if you lead a good life. But how many people get drunk these days! How many not only get drunk, but also quarrel vilely and viciously! Such people do not sing: “This is the day that the Lord has made.” The Lord answers them: “You are darkness, and I did not create you.” If you want to be the day that the Lord created, then lead a good life, and you will have the light of truth, which will never go down in your hearts.
