☦ Saints of the day

  • Ven. Poemen the Great
    📜 Life of the saint
    Ven. Poemen the Great was a monk and spiritual father in the Egyptian desert, active in the 4th and early 5th centuries. He is venerated as one of the Desert Fathers, residing primarily in the Scetis (Wadi El-Baramus) region. His fame rests upon the collection of his spiritual teachings, known as the "Sayings of the Desert Fathers" or "Apophthegmata Patrum," which were recorded by his disciples. These sayings, widely accepted as authentic, emphasize humility, prayer, the struggle against passions, and the importance of a gentle spirit. Poemen is particularly noted for his profound wisdom in guiding monks towards inner peace and union with God. He is remembered for his compassion, his ability to discern the spiritual state of others, and his teaching that true strength lies in gentleness and self-mastery. His legacy endures through these recorded words, forming a cornerstone of Eastern Christian monastic spirituality.
  • Great-martyr Phanurius the Newly Appeared of Rhodes
    📜 Life of the saint
    Saint Phanourios (Phanurius), the Martyr of Rhodes, is commemorated on March 16 in the Orthodox Church. He was a soldier who suffered martyrdom during the Diocletian persecution (c. 303 AD) in the island of Rhodes. According to historical and hagiographical sources, he was condemned for his Christian faith and executed by beheading. His relics were discovered in the tenth century, an event that led to his veneration as "the Newly Appeared" (Neophytos), signifying their rediscovery after a period of concealment. This discovery occurred during the reign of Emperor Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus. The saint is particularly revered in Greece and the Dodecanese islands. His feast day is observed in the Eastern Orthodox liturgical calendar, and he is invoked for protection against illness and for the healing of wounds. His life is documented in the Synaxarion and Menologion of the Orthodox Church, affirming his martyrdom under Diocletian and the subsequent revelation of his relics.

📖 Readings of the day

Epistle — 2 Corinthians 1.12-20

12 For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward.

13 For we write none other things unto you, than what ye read or acknowledge; and I trust ye shall acknowledge even to the end;

14 As also ye have acknowledged us in part, that we are your rejoicing, even as ye also are ours in the day of the Lord Jesus.

15 And in this confidence I was minded to come unto you before, that ye might have a second benefit;

16 And to pass by you into Macedonia, and to come again out of Macedonia unto you, and of you to be brought on my way toward Judaea.

17 When I therefore was thus minded, did I use lightness? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be yea yea, and nay nay?

18 But as God is true, our word toward you was not yea and nay.

19 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Timotheus, was not yea and nay, but in him was yea.

20 For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.

Gospel — Matthew 22.23-33

23 The same day came to him the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked him,

24 Saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.

25 Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife unto his brother:

26 Likewise the second also, and the third, unto the seventh.

27 And last of all the woman died also.

28 Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her.

29 Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.

30 For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.

31 But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying,

32 I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.

33 And when the multitude heard this, they were astonished at his doctrine.

✠ Continuous Gospel reading

John 2 KJV

1 And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:

2 And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.

3 And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.

4 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.

5 His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do {it}.

6 And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.

7 Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.

8 And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare {it}.

9 When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,

10 And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: {but} thou hast kept the good wine until now.

11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

12 After this he went down to Capernaum, he, and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples: and they continued there not many days.

13 And the Jews' passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem,

14 And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting:

15 And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables;

16 And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise.

17 And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.

18 Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?

19 Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.

20 Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?

21 But he spake of the temple of his body.

22 When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.

23 Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast {day}, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did.

24 But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all {men},

25 And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.
