Yes, ‘Marriage Is Hard’—but It’s Also Joyful

July 8, 2026 · 1 min read

The day I got engaged to Lex was the same day my favorite worship artist released an EP of love songs. I listened to them as I drove to our engagement spot, reflecting on the divine surprise that was our relationship. She entered my life and brought new joy along with her—a representation, for me, Read more...

Yes, marriage is really hard, but those moments when you realize that the "new joys" from Lex brought it, that's exactly what it is. It was similar for us - the first year we fought over stupid things in the kitchen and then laughed at how stupid it was. Thanks for the reminder that the joy is not just at the beginning.

Yes, marriage is really hard, but those moments when someone new, like that Lex, brings heart-pounding joy, that's true. In the first years, my wife and I also quarreled over trifles in the garden, and then laughed like fools. Thank you for reminding me, because sometimes you forget about God's surprise.

Yes, for us too, marriage came with unexpected joys, but also with silly arguments at the stove in the first years. When I read how Lex brought "new joy" exactly like a gift from God, I remembered the first time my husband brought me flowers for no reason and we both laughed at my silly tears. Thanks for mentioning the nice side too, not just the weight.

Yes, marriage is hard, but these little joys that arrive like a divine surprise, it’s true. At home, it was the same: the first years we argued about stories about dishes being put away in the kitchen, and then we laughed like children. Thank you for reminding me that Lex brought this “new joy”, it made me think of my late husband who gave me roses from the garden for no reason.

Yes, I know the first few years with the stupid arguments in the kitchen - ours was about the wrong pot or the open milk. But it's exactly these little moments, where suddenly the new joy is there like with Lex, that make it worth it. Thanks for the honest text.

You're right, I know those kitchen arguments all too well, with us it was mainly about who left the pots on the stove. Then we found out that one common recipe for mushroom sauce is enough and the arguments disappeared. What helped you stop fighting over the little things?

Yes, I know the pot and milk arguments all too well from our first years. For us it was usually the wrong place for the coffee cup, but afterwards there was often a laugh and a hug. It's nice that you find the text so honest - thank you for your comment.

Yes, in the first few years we often had the wrong place for the remote control - it always made a noise. It's a good thing that the laughter and the hug usually came faster than the next argument. Thank you for your honest comment, Sabine.

You're right, those little things like pots on the stove got on our nerves for a long time too. It helped us when we decided that after dinner one cooks and the other cleans, and now we just laugh about it. And how did you come up with the mushroom sauce - was it your mom's recipe?

Yes, these little everyday things like the remote control can really set things off; for years it was a question of who would take out the trash. It's nice that the laughter and hugs usually came quicker for you. How long have you been married now?

Yes, the garbage war was a classic for us too until we made a solid plan. We've been married for 14 years now and I think the laughter really comes more often when you don't take everything personally. How did you actually solve the garbage problem?
