Wendell Berry, agrarian writer who envisioned a world ‘redeemed only by love,’ dies at 92

Wendell Berry, the prolific American author whose work spanned decades and who spent his career urging Americans to pursue a simpler, more virtuous life, died on Aug. 31, his family said.

His daughter Mary confirmed his passing via the New York Times . His cause of death was not immediately known; the Kentucky-born writer was 92 years old.

A writer of fiction, poetry, and essays, Berry was known for his advocacy of rural life, for urging readers to develop a close connection to farming and food, and for calling for the care of the environment.

His work united a broad cross-section of the American public from liberal environmentalists to Christian homesteaders to local food advocates to conservative conservationists.

Шкода, що він пішов. Читала його есе про ферму Lane’s Landing і про те, як земля лікує, коли до неї ставишся з любов’ю, а не як до товару. Цікаво, чи встиг він дописати щось останнє перед смертю.

His essays on Lane’s Landing always stuck with me too, especially the part about treating the land with love instead of like a product. I keep coming back to his line that the world is “redeemed only by love.” Sad to hear he’s gone at 92. Wonder if his family will publish any unfinished work.

It's a pity that I didn't have time, I guess. I also read about Lane's Landing - how he did everything there with his own hands and said that the land responded with gratitude. Have you tried his "The Unsettling of America"? It seems to me that it is most acutely about how we turned the land into a commodity.
