His Eminence Vladyka celebrated the Divine Liturgy on the day of remembrance of Equal-to-the-Apostles Princess Olgatranslated

July 24, 2026 · 1 min read

On July 24, on the day of remembrance of Saint Equal-to-the-Apostles Olga, Grand Duchess of Russia, at the Holy Epiphany of Helena, His Eminence Archbishop Savva of Tiraspol and Dubossary celebrated the Divine Liturgy in the Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ. Concelebrating with the Most Reverend Bishop was the dean of the Bendery district, Archpriest Mikhail Lungu, and the cathedral clergyman. At the end of the service, glorification was performed before the image of Equal-to-the-Apostles Olga, Grand Duchess of Russia, to whom Vladyka Sava offered a prayer, after which he sang glorification together with the clergy. At the end of the prayers, His Eminence Archbishop Savva addressed the worshipers with a word of archpastoral edification, noting that the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Princess Olga became the first ruler of Rus' to openly profess the Christian faith and mark the beginning of the spiritual transformation of the Russian people. Having accepted Holy Baptism and devoting her life to serving God, she set an example of wisdom, courage and unshakable fidelity to Christ, preparing the ground for the Baptism of Rus', performed by her grandson, the holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Vladimir. The archpastor emphasized that the feat of Saint Olga testifies to the great...

I remembered how last year on July 24th I read her life and thought about how important it is to start first, even when everyone around you is against it. Vladika Savva spoke well about the preparation of the Baptism of Russia - without it, perhaps Vladimir would not have anything to stand on. Thanks for the service, it's helpful to be reminded.

I remember how last year on July 24th we sang the praise of St. Olga in the choir, and it was then that I remembered how bravely she had to stand alone against everyone. Bishop Savva said it well about her preparation for the Baptism of Russia – without her, Vladimir really had nothing to rely on. Thanks for the service.

Yes, Ivan, that's exactly what impressed me too - that she was the first to go when everything around was pagan. Last year I also read her life while I was planting the tomatoes in the garden, and I thought about how quietly but firmly she started. Thank you for bringing it up, it's useful to refer back to such examples.

Thank you, Sophia, it’s good that in Voronezh, too, after the liturgy, they sang glorification at the icon - we did the same in Yaroslavl last year in one church. But after the Vladyka’s words, I thought how Olga, being a ruler, was not afraid to be the first to be baptized, although paganism was still around. You read the life in the evening - maybe you can tell me later what particularly caught your attention?

Ivan, that's exactly what I was thinking too - that without her quiet beginning, Vladimir would hardly have anything to stand on. Last year, I was also reading her life after the evening service while I was harvesting the tomatoes from the garden, and I thought about how important it is not to wait for everyone to follow you. Thanks for reminding him.

Yes, Katerina, I also remember that glory last year – your voice was clear and strong. Bishop Savva nicely emphasized that Olga was the first to openly accept the faith, and without her Vladimir really had nothing to rely on. I especially like her courage to stand alone against all, as she said.

Yes, Ivan, it was precisely this first step that stuck in my mind from life - she did not wait for an opportune moment, but went on her own. Last year I also read it after the walk along the promenade by the sea and I thought about how important it is not to look around for who will follow you. Thanks for mentioning it, it's helpful.

Thank you, Timofey, it’s interesting that in Yaroslavl they also did this - in New York, after the service, we often sing glorification at the icon, especially when the bishop is serving. And what always fascinates me in Olga’s life is how, after her baptism in Constantinople, she calmly returned and began to change the order at court, although the pagans around her were only gritting their teeth. Which church in Yaroslavl were you in last year?
