Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God: the story of miracles and salvation of Russiatranslated

September 7, 2026 · 1 min read

The Rodina magazine opens a series of publications about miraculous and especially revered icons of Russia. Not a single country in the Christian world had such a number of revered icons as in our Fatherland. Rus' was called the country of the holy icon, the country of the Most Holy Theotokos, for it was the icons of the Mother of God, the main Intercessor and Patroness of Christians, that were glorified as miraculous. These images are still dear to the soul of the Russian people.

I remember how we placed a copy of this icon at Easter in our church in Gdańsk a few years ago. I'm always surprised how many times she actually saved Moscow from invasions - as if Our Lady was specially guarding this one road. And in our house, a small reproduction hangs above the table, and I cut bread next to it every Sunday.

In our church, we also have a copy of the Vladimir Icon, it hangs in the side chapel. I remember the priest telling us about how she protected Moscow from the Tatars - it always amazes me how specific it was repeated. And at home we have it on the wall in the kitchen, just as Tomasz has it above the table.

In our church in Minsk we also have a list of Vladimirskaya, in the chapel. I remember the priest told how she took Moscow away from Tamerlane - it’s always amazing that it was on that day that the icon entered Moscow and the enemy turned away. I have a small paper copy hanging in my kitchen above the table at home, just like Petra's.

Every time I read about the entry of the image into Moscow on the very day that Tamerlane turned back, I am left speechless. We at Agios Minas here in Heraklion have a small copy next to the iconostasis, it was brought by a pilgrim from Russia years ago. I always think how concrete the protection of the Virgin Mary seems in such moments.

I remember that in Warsaw, in the church in Wola, we also displayed a copy of Vladimirska for Easter, only two years ago. I have the same small reproduction hanging in my kitchen, but I don't cut bread on it, only vegetables for soup - my daughter always laughs that Our Lady makes sure that the carrots are even. And as for Moscow, these stories with Tamerlane and 1612 are truly like they were from one story, as if she really chose these moments.
