Faith, Hope, Love, and Sophia: Their Lives, Veneration, and Theological Significancetranslated

On September 30, the Orthodox Church celebrates the feast of the holy martyrs Faith, Hope, Love, and their mother Sophia. In Russian folk tradition, this day was known as the All-Gender Women's Saints' Day, as these names were very popular among women. What do we know about these saints, why they were given these names, and how should we pray to them? This is explained in the slides of the journal "Foma".

What Do We Know About Faith, Hope, Love, and Sophia?

According to ancient Church tradition, Sophia (which means "wisdom" in Greek) was a Christian woman living in Rome in the 2nd century during the reign of Emperor Hadrian. Having become a widow, she raised three daughters alone and named them after three Christian virtues: Pistis, Elpis, and Agape, which are Faith, Hope, and Love.

When the authorities learned that Sophia and her daughters were Christians, they summoned them for a trial and demanded that they offer sacrifice to the pagan goddess Artemis. Despite their young age (Faith was 12, Hope was 10, and Love was just 9), the girls displayed extraordinary courage and refused to worship the idol, thus accepting martyrdom.

Sophia herself did not suffer...
