It was the same in our elementary school, and my daughters still learned to read and do math - mainly by reading to them in the evenings and doing simple arithmetic tasks while shopping. I'm not sure whether the new ban really helps or just puts more pressure on parents. What does your experience say to the rest of you?

Our kids had no homework in grade one either, and our youngest still picked up reading mostly from the bedtime stories we read together. The part that worries me is whether this just shifts the whole load onto parents who already juggle work and evening routines. What does the neuropsychologist say about kids who don’t get that extra help at home?

It was similar for us, my daughter learned a lot by cooking together and hiking, where we incorporated numbers and letters in a playful way. I think the ban really relieves the burden on the children, but yes, it shifts a lot of things onto the parents - it sometimes becomes difficult when you're a single parent. How old were your daughters when they could read really fluently?
