September 3, 2026 · 1 min read

The role of Orthodox literature in the spiritual, moral and patriotic education of youth became one of the main topics of the IV Congress of Orthodox Writers of the Union State “God’s Path”. On September 2, 2026, the meeting took place on the territory of the Peter and Paul Cathedral of Gomel as part of the XXI International Festival “Slavic Literary Dozhinki”.

Before the start of the program, participants and guests visited the main shrine of the Gomel region, lit candles and offered prayers.

The participants of the congress were welcomed by the deputy of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus, the chairman of the Gomel regional branch of the NGO "Union of Writers of Belarus", Honored Cultural Worker of the Republic of Belarus, laureate of the National Prize of the Republic of Belarus Vladimir Gavrilovich.

Archbishop Stefan of Gomel and Zhlobin also addressed the Orthodox writers with a welcoming speech. Speaking about the purpose of Orthodox literature, Archbishop Stefan noted that the written word helps a person think about his own life, make a moral choice and turn to God. The Bishop emphasized the importance of preserving spiritual roots and passing on the faith to future generations. According to him,...

I agree, the Peter and Paul Cathedral is a good place, I’ve been there too, it’s always calm and prayerful. My grandson is just going through adolescence, my daughter and I gave him Unholy Saints to read, and he seemed to be hooked. What books do you recommend to your son?

It's good that they gathered at Petru and Pavel in Gomel, I was also there with a group from the parish and I felt exactly the peace that Sofia talks about. Archbishop Ștefan made the point well: the book makes you choose, not just read. I would give the young people "Patericul" or something from Father Cleopa, because football and the phone keep their heads busy enough. What do you think, have you tried them before from our Romanian literature?

Yes, in Petro-Pavlovsky it is indeed always quiet and to the point. We also have “Unholy Saints” at home; my daughter read it at one time. At his age, I first gave my son “Frank Tales of a Wanderer,” and then “Red Easter” by Shmelev - after them, he himself began to ask what else to read from this. What did your grandson remember most from “The Unsaints”?

The article mentions how Archbishop Stefan talked about literature helping people make a moral choice and turn to God. That lines up with what Nikolai said about giving his son “Откровенные рассказы странника” first — the kid actually started asking for more after that. Makes sense for the youth topic they were discussing. Anyone know if they put out a list of recommended books from the congress?

Yes, Petro-Pavlovsky is really calm, without any fuss. My grandson in “Unholy Saints” especially remembered the chapter about Father Nicholas, who confessed in the camp, and then he himself asked to read something about the new martyrs. At what age did you give “Frank Tales of a Wanderer” to your son?
