I hope they serve the same cabbage rolls as at St. Nicholas last year—Grandma Maria’s recipe is the only one that doesn’t fall apart.

In Siberia, too, we always stew cabbage with meat on the altar meal, but to prevent it from falling apart, you must boil the rice separately in advance, as my grandmother did. I wonder if the Bulgarians in Dolna Sekirna have the same secret or a different one? I would be glad if anyone shares the recipe.

Very nice that everyone can join in the treat. Last year, we brought fresh cabbage and onions from our garden, and the women in Dolna Sekirna made just such sarmis that do not fall apart. Tamara, here in Bulgaria, we usually boil the rice in half in advance and add a little egg to the filling - try it, it becomes stable.

The truth is that sarmi always turn out better when the rice is cooked separately first. Last year in the parish I tried some that they brought from Krasimira's garden and they didn't fall apart at all, just as she says. Does anyone know if they put a lot of dill in Dolna Sekirna or if they prefer just onion and pepper?

Those cabbage rolls were solid, I remember grabbing seconds myself. My mother-in-law always adds a bit more rice to hers so they hold together even better. Anyone know if Grandma Maria is bringing them again this year?

Those cabbage rolls were the first thing to disappear last time. I like when they use a little more rice too, keeps them from falling apart on the plate. Did your mother-in-law ever try adding a pinch of mint to the filling?
