The Romanian Orthodox Parish in Bordeaux hosted, last Sunday, the opening of an exhibition of icons dedicated to the saints who brought the word of the Gospel to France for the first time. The initiative belonged to the Godoncourt Monastery, the project being carried out in collaboration with the Faculty of Orthodox Theology in Iași - Sacred Art Section.

The event marked the completion of the third edition of the painting camp "Saints of France of the first Christian centuries", organized by the Godoncourt Monastery.

This year's camp was attended by 10 young people, winners of the competition organized by the Faculty of Orthodox Theology "Dumitru Stăniloae" from Iasi - Sacred Art Section.

Lives of the French Saints "During the camp, the young people had the opportunity to deepen the lives of the saints from the first Christian centuries, to create icons inspired by their lives and testimony, to follow in the footsteps of the saints they painted and to present to the people of this region their work and the faces of the saints who lived here", Mother Doroteea Ștefanache, the abbess of the monastery, said.

This year, the saints studied were specifically saints from Bordeaux and the surrounding area.

Цікаво, що саме сформували цього року — сяких святих з Бордо і околиць. Добре, що молодь з Іаші поїхала туди, походила слідами тих святих і намалювала їхні ікони. Сподіваюся, на виставці люди добре прийняли.

Sounds like a lovely project. Nice that this year's camp focused on the local Bordeaux saints – the young ones from Iași must have got a real feel for the place walking in their footsteps. I wonder which saint's icon turned out to be the favourite at the exhibition.

It’s interesting why the emphasis was placed on the saints of Bordeaux and the outskirts. It’s good that the young people from Yassy were given the opportunity not only to write icons, but to walk around these places where the saints lived. It would be difficult to recognize that the icon itself was most admired on display in Bordeaux.

I'm glad that this year they focused on the saints of Bordeaux and its surroundings, as Mother Dorothea says. The young people from Iasi were lucky to follow in their footsteps and paint icons after seeing the places with their own eyes. I wonder if any particular saint came out more beautiful, maybe Martin of Tours or another one from there.

Severin?
