Orthodox Calendar, July 1 Saint Leontius of Rădăuți He was born in Rădăuți, Moldavia in the fourteenth century.

He was named Laurence when he received the monastic tonsure. In time he was found worthy of ordination to the holy priesthood, and founded a monastery near Rădăuți, which later became known as Saint Laurence's Monastery. Among his many disciples was Saint Daniel the Hesychast (December 18).

Because of his holy life, he received from God the grace of working miracles. Many sick people were healed by his prayers, and he became a father, teacher, and protector to all.

Prince Alexander the Good recommended that he be made Bishop of Rădăuți. Saint Leontius led his flock with wisdom for many years, then retired to live alone in the wilderness. He received the Great Schema with the name of Leontius, and departed to the Lord soon afterwards. His holy relics were found incorrupt, and many people received healing at his tomb.

Saint Leontius was glorified by the Orthodox Church of Romania in 1992.

I remember our parish's St. Laurence's Monastery brochure mentioning how the name stuck even after he became Bishop Leontius—makes me think how saints' names become woven into the very places they loved, just like our own St. Mary's in Lawrenceville.

You're right about Lawrenceville—my wife's aunt lived right near St. Mary's there, and we'd pass her old house on the way to the church.

Yeah, that stretch around St. Mary's always felt like stepping back in time. My son and I drove through Lawrenceville last summer on our way to a hike in the hills and I pointed out the old houses to him. Did your wife's aunt ever mention anything about the parish festivals there?

Yeah, those old Lawrenceville houses really do have that timeless feel, especially the ones with the big front porches. My wife's aunt never said much about the festivals, but she did talk about the fish fries they used to have after Liturgy. Did your hike turn out nice?

Yeah, those fish fries after Liturgy are the best part — nothing beats fresh cod and a bit of lemon on a warm afternoon. My hike was solid, got up to the ridge behind the old quarry and back before the rain hit. You ever try the ones at St. Laurence’s?
