St. Mc. Chiric and Iulita; St. Vladimir, Illuminator of Russiatranslated

July 14, 2026 · 1 min read

Orthodox calendar, July 15 Holy Martyrs Chiric and Iulita The Holy Martyrs Chiric and Iulita (+304) were originally from Lycaonia (Asia Minor), Saint Iulita being the mother of Saint Chiric, aged 3.

During the persecution started against the Christians by the emperor Diocletian (286 – 305), Saint Juliet took her child and fled to Seleucia (southern Asia Minor), then to Tarsus Cilicia (locality in Asia Minor, 16 km inland towards the southern coast of today's Turkey) to escape the torments to which the Christians were subjected.

In Tarsus of Cilicia she was caught and brought to trial before the governor Alexander who subjected her to torture in the hope that she would renounce the Orthodox faith. While the saint was being whipped with oxen, Saint Chiric, in the arms of the pagan governor Alexander, began to cry, for which the pagan killed him by hitting him on the steps of the judgment seat.

In the end, enduring numerous torments, Saint Juliet passed to the Lord receiving a martyr's death by beheading. The bodies of the two saints were buried with honor by some Christians in the city.

Interestingly, the Cilician Tarsus is only 16 km inland from today's Turkish coast. Little Chiric was only 3 years old and he had already suffered so much - it's really moving. I remember how we once sang this tropar in the choir, glas 4, and I always thought about the courage of that mother.

Yes, these 16 km from the coast are a specific distance, I immediately imagined this road with a child in my arms. Little Chiric at the age of three and his courage in front of his mother - it always surprises me. And in which choir did you sing this tropar, in our place in Mokotów or somewhere else?

Yes, 16 km with a baby in your arms is not a breeze, especially in the heat. Here in Białystok, I sang this troper in the parish choir at the church of St. Nicholas, but I will never forget how little Chiryk cries in front of this pagan - it always breaks my heart. Did you sing it in Mokotów regularly or only on special occasions?
