He was born on September 25, 1913, in the Cărămidarilor slum in Bucharest, Tineretului district today, being the third child of the florist Ion Coandă Tănase, originally from the Olten village of Mierea Birnicii, on Valea Amaradiai, and Ana Munteanu, originally from Cârța commune, Sibiu county.

The father told his wife to "reject" the child before birth because they were poor, but the future artist's mother ignored his demand because she was God-fearing. Later, the life of the family would be embellished by the trills of this talented child.

Maria Tănase made her debut in 1921, at the end-of-year celebration of the primary school in Tăbăcari. She had to drop out of high school in her last year to work with her parents.

In 1929, she fell in love with a doctor and became pregnant, and he helped her terminate the pregnancy, an act that the artist regretted for the rest of her life, as she was unable to have any more children. The end of this teenage relationship also pushed her down the path of tobacco addiction, which would ruin her career and health.
