The Venerable Ioann, Igumen of Pochaev, in the world Ivan Zhelazo, was born in the middle of the 16th century in Pokutia in Galicia.

At the age of ten, he came to the Transfiguration Ugornetsky Monastery, and at twelve years old he took monastic vows. He then governed the monastery for more than twenty years during a time when increasing persecution against Orthodoxy by Catholics and Uniates was intensifying.

In the early 17th century, the Venerable withdrew to Pochaev Mountain and settled in a cave near the ancient Uspensky Monastery, famous for its miraculous Pochaev Icon of the Mother of God…
