The name Igor is of Scandinavian origin and has been known in Rus' since the time of the first Rurikovichs. In 1146, Prince Igor Olgovich, the great-grandson of Yaroslav the Wise, inherited the Kiev throne after the death of his elder brother Vsevolod. However, the people of Kiev supported another contender for the throne, Izyaslav Mstislavich. Igor was defeated, captured and imprisoned. His reign lasted only about two weeks.
