More than 500 Bronze Age graves have been discovered along the route of a future railwaytranslated

More than 500 prehistoric graves from the Bronze Age were recently unearthed along the route of the future Caransebeș-Lugoj railway, following excavations carried out by the "Vasile Pârvan" Institute of Archeology of the Romanian Academy.

The most important discovery was made near the town of Sacu, Caraș-Severin county, where archaeologists are investigating a cremation necropolis belonging to the Balta Sărată culture.

"The bones were deposited either directly in pits or in ceramic vessels, alongside objects such as stone tools and flint blades," Silviu Ene, archaeologist at the "Vasile Pârvan" Institute and research coordinator, told Agerpres.

A special element of the necropolis is the discovery of a fragment of obsidian, material that is not specific to the area and that may indicate the existence of links between local communities and remote populations.

Research has also identified settlements and vestiges from the Bronze Age, the Roman period, Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages.
