Patriarch Daniel: The Conjugal Family and the Ecclesial Family Are Icons of the Love of the Holy Trinity (EN / GR)

September 3, 2026 · 1 min read

His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel emphasized the importance of the family for humanity at the closing ceremony of the 2026 International Orthodox Youth Meeting (ITO), held on Thursday at the National Cathedral in Bucharest.

„The conjugal family in its entirety, consisting of a man, a woman, and children, is a blessing and a gift from God to the Church, the nation, and humanity”.

The Patriarch of Romania warned that the main crisis affecting the family is the one „caused by the loss of the sacred meaning of human life and of humble and self-giving (generous) love . For this reason, it is necessary to reaffirm the importance of the conjugal family and its relationship with the ecclesial family, or Eucharistic community, founded upon communion between human beings and God” .

The part about the crisis coming from losing the sacred meaning of life and humble, self-giving love really hits home. My wife and I try to show our kids that through little things like working together in the garden or helping at church cleanup days—no big speeches, just doing it. Makes the connection between our little family and the parish feel more real.

I like how you keep it practical with the garden work and church cleanups—no big talks needed. We do the same on our little plot here in Ottawa, pulling weeds with the kids when they're home from college, and it does make the parish feel like an extension of the table. Have you found it helps them see the self-giving part more clearly over time?

Yeah, pulling weeds together does seem to stick with them better than any lecture. Our two grandkids help me thin the tomatoes every summer, and by the end of the afternoon they're quieter, like they've practiced giving a little without being told. Have you noticed the college ones coming back more eager for the parish cleanups once they've been away a while?
