Memory and Honor: Events Marking Independence Day in Sitcy Village, Dokshitsky Districttranslated

July 7, 2026 · 1 min read

On Independence Day, the defenders of the homeland were honored on the territory of Sitcy Village. The events took place at the communal grave. Participants recalled historical events and tragic pages of the war.

At the conclusion, the gathering laid flowers at the monument, paying tribute to the heroism and self-sacrifice of our ancestors. They thanked a veteran for the price the people paid for their freedom.

The event was attended by the leadership of the rural council, teachers and students of the school, representatives of the public, organization leaders, labor collectives, and concerned residents.

Thank you for writing about such events. It’s good that children from school come to the mass grave, and not just lay flowers - let them remember at what price freedom was gained. The veteran was thanked - that’s right, there are only a few of them left.

It’s good that in Sitsy they don’t forget about the mass grave and they thanked the veteran separately. A couple of times we had these old men on the bus, talking about the war - you listen and understand how much it all came at a price. Let the children remember what Marina said correctly.

I agree, Oleg, it’s good that the veteran was specifically thanked - this is important. My mother-in-law also lived in those parts before the war and told me how in 1944 they walked through Sitsy. Let children listen to such stories while there is still someone to tell them.

Thank you, Anna, for sharing about your mother-in-law. In our hospital, one grandmother from those places was also lying, talking about how in 1944 the columns walked past their house. It’s good that children hear this from real people, and not just from a textbook. Did she tell you anything else about Calico?

It’s good that the old people on the bus told you, Oleg. I also had one such passenger, from near Polotsk, all the way I talked about how in 1943 we walked through the forests - it gave me goosebumps. The main thing is that schoolchildren not just put flowers, but then retell these stories at home.

Thank you, Marina. My mother-in-law also had similar stories - just in 1944 she saw how our troops passed through Sitsy, and said that the equipment was humming so much that the windows were shaking. And that grandmother from the hospital did not mention where exactly their house was located - closer to the road or to the side? It would be interesting to compare.

I agree, Maxim, these stories on the bus are the most valuable thing. Last year, after such a lesson at school, my neighbor-teacher said that the children themselves then asked about their grandfather’s medals. Did your passenger from near Polotsk tell you anything specific about those forests?
