Isaac-Solomou: 30 years since the murders that marked the collective memory of Cypriot Hellenismtranslated

This year marks 30 years since the cowardly murder of Tasos Isaac and the culprits still remain unpunished. The 24-year-old Tasos Isaac was murdered on August 11, 1996 during an anti-occupation event in the dead zone in Deryneia. Isaac participated in the motorcyclist march that had started from Berlin to occupied Kyrenia. On 11 August 1996, when a group of motorcyclists reached the dead zone in Deryneia, clashes occurred between the demonstrators and Turkish Cypriots, as well as Turkish nationalists, among whom were members of the "Grey Wolves".

During the incidents, Tasos Isaac, while trying to help another protester who was being beaten by the Turks, got trapped in the dead zone and fell to the ground. A group of protesters tried to free him, while men on the other side of the barbed wire beat him with clubs, stones and other objects. The beating continued for some time while UN peacekeepers were in the area.
