July 13, 2026 · 1 min read

The Funeral Service of the late historical researcher and veteran lawyer Apostolos Papathanassios, who fell asleep on Sunday, July 12, was performed today by Rev. Metropolitan Dimitrias Mr. Ignatios, in the Holy Metropolitan Church of Agios Nikolaos Volos. The late Apostolos Papathanasiou was honored by the Holy Diocese of Dimitria on November 4, 2017, in a special event held at the University of Thessaly, for his overall contribution to historical research and highlighting the history of Dimitria and the wider region of Magnesia. During that event, Rev. Ignatius awarded him the Highest Honorary Distinction of the Holy Metropolis of Demetrias, the Golden Cross after Diploma, as a minimal expression of gratitude for his significant scientific, social and spiritual work, stressing: "We honor you, first of all, as a person and a family man, as your family shows the man of faith, patience and perseverance, dignity and morality. Kingdom of Heaven Aποστόλου. I remember how in 2017, Bishop Ignatius awarded him the Golden Cross precisely because he delved into the history of our Magnisia for so many years. He was a good man, a real one.

Good heaven to the Apostle. I remember that event at the University of Thessaly in 2017 when he was awarded the Golden Cross; he spoke with such simplicity about the history of Magnesia that it made you want to go and look for archives. Metropolitan Ignatius said it very correctly, a family man first of all.

Yes, I also remember that event at the University of Thessaly in 2017. The Apostle spoke so simply and specifically about the archives of Magnesia that he was really drawn to engage. Ο Μητροπολίτης Ιγνάτιος said it correctly, his family showed a man of patience.

Indeed, the golden cross awarded to the university in 2017 was precisely for digging into Magnesia's archives all his life. He was a good person, his family showed it. May God build the kingdom.

Yes, Maya, it was her in-depth work in the archives that was her greatest contribution. The family also really reflected his fortitude, as the Metropolitan said. May God build the kingdom.

Kingdom of Heaven. I remember how in 2017, at an awards ceremony at the university, he modestly stood aside, as if it wasn’t about him. But without his archival excavations, we would not have known half of the history of Magnisia. He was a good man, yes.

Yes, Dimitra, that speech of his at the University was indeed one of the most simple and meaningful I have heard. I remember that afterwards my husband and I went and looked a bit through the Municipal archives for our neighborhood. The Metropolitan said it well, first the family and then everything else.

Yes, Vakhtang, he spent so many years in the archives that it is truly amazing how many documents he saved. You also said correctly about the family, I remember the metropolitan's words very well. God gave him the kingdom of heaven.

Yes, Vakhtang, delving into the archives was indeed his greatest work. I remember how he himself said that it took him weeks to examine one old document. The family was really a mirror of his faith, as the Metropolitan noted.
