Historic day for Byzantine Kastoria – Two iconic pilgrimage sites restored and handed overtranslated

With the contribution to the local community and the religious use of the restored Holy Churches of Taxiarchis Metropolis and Agios Georgios Omorfoklisia, where the unique wood-carved image of the Saint is located, the Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni completed another cycle of important interventions for the protection, promotion and utilization of the cultural heritage of unspoiled Kastoria. The works rendered reinforce the city's character as one of the most important cores of the country's Byzantine and post-Byzantine cultural heritage.
On Monday, August 3, 2026, Mrs. Lina Mendoni delivered two more works of the Ministry of Culture, through the Ephorate of Antiquities, to the Holy Diocese of Kastoria.
In Agios Georgios Omorfoklisia
Specifically, in the Byzantine Holy Church of Agios Georgios Omorfoklisia of Pentavryssos, the unveiling of the wood-carved sacred Icon of Agios Georgios the Trophy-bearer, a work of unique value from the 13th century, which was preserved and renovated by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Kastoria, took place.
