Samarina commemorated the Dormition and Transfiguration of the Blessed Virgin Marytranslated

August 18, 2026 · 1 min read

With particular splendor, rapture and spiritual joy, the festival was celebrated on Sunday, August 16, 2026, the eve of the great Theodoric feast of the Assumption and Transfiguration of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in Samarina of Grevena, the famous Vlach-speaking village of Pindos. Following the kind invitation of the Reverend Metropolitan of Grevena, Mr. David, as the relevant Pastor, the Reverend Metropolitan Elassonos, Mr. Chariton, and the Reverend Metropolitan, Mr. Ieronymos, of Larissa and Tyrnavos, came to Samarina, in order to celebrate with the people of Samarina the great feast of the Dormition and in Heavens of Metastasis of the Most Holy Theotokos.

In the historic and majestic Church of the Dormition of the Virgin of Samarina, a brilliant High Priestly Mass was held, presided over by the Reverend Metropolitan Elassonos Mr. Charitonos and co-celebrants by the Reverend Metropolitans of Larissa and Tyrnavos Mr. Ieronymos and Mr. David of Grevena.

The presence of the three Holy High Priests gave special splendor to the celebration, while a multitude of believers flooded the Holy Church, participating reverently in the Divine Liturgy and honoring the great feast of the Virgin Mary.

I am glad that all three metropolitans went to Samarina together. The church of the Dormition is really magnificent, I remember seeing it once when I went up by bike to Grevena. How many people turned up in the end?

Thanks for sharing it. I am glad that Metropolitan David invited the other two as well, so it became a real celebration. The church of the Dormition in Samarina is really impressive, I remember going with my husband years ago for the celebration and it was crowded until late. Approximately how many believers eventually gathered?
