On Sunday, August 9, 2026, our local Church celebrated the Memorial of the Holy Young Martyr Euthymius, Metropolitan of Rhodes, centered on the parish church of Agia Skepi-Saint Euthymius of the city of Rhodes. The Solemn Vespers on Saturday evening was presided over by the Archdeacon of the Holy Metropolis, Fr. Theonas, and on the day after the Divine Liturgy by our Most Reverend Metropolitan. In his speech, he referred to the saint's martyrdom and its importance for the Orthodox people of Rhodes during those years of martyrdom during the Ottoman rule, and emphasized the responsibility of the staff of the Pauline Church of Rhodes towards the place and its tradition. The Hieromartyr Euthymios was elected Metropolitan of Rhodes, when the Ottomans occupied the island, in 1523, and he faithfully shepherded the Orthodox flock in those troubled times. In 1529 he was arrested as the leader of a conspiracy and was executed together with other Clergy and community actors of Rhodes. He was honored by Christians as a Martyr immediately after his martyrdom.

I remember how my father once told us about this Saint Euthymius when we were on a pilgrimage to Rhodes. The year 1523 and then the terrible year 1529 - one cannot even imagine what he had to live through. It is good that it is still talked about in the sermon, because responsibility for tradition is not just an empty word.
