Lebanon’s Christians fear sovereignty will be traded in regional diplomacy

July 7, 2026 · 1 min read

Maronite patriarch Cardinal Bechara Boutros Rai, who met  with Pope Leo XIV last week, said the pope’s visit to Lebanon last December, held under the motto “Blessed are the peacemakers,” marked the beginning of a new phase of dialogue for peace. Rai expressed hope that the ongoing negotiations between Lebanon and Israel would lead to a true, just, comprehensive, and lasting peace — but Christians there fear their country’s sovereignty may be at stake.

Rai warned in his Sunday homily that Lebanon “must not become the price of any international or regional understanding, nor an arena for settling scores, but rather a message of peace.” He expressed hope that the efforts involving the United States, Lebanon, and Israel would bear fruit and lead to an agreement that removes “the specter of war” from Lebanon.

His remarks come as Lebanon finds itself at the center of two parallel diplomatic tracks: a U.S.-Iran agreement and a direct trilateral framework involving Lebanon, Israel, and the United States. In both, Lebanon’s future is at stake and the country’s Christians remain a central part of the national conversation on peace and sovereignty.

It’s good that Patriarch Rai said directly: Lebanon should not become a bargaining chip in other people’s agreements. I hope that negotiations with Israel and the United States will truly remove the threat of war, and not just surrender sovereignty. Christians have always been the voice of reason there, let's see if they are heard this time.

It is true that Patriarch Raï was clear: Lebanon must not become a bargaining chip. I hope that these negotiations with the United States and Israel will really put war away without sacrificing sovereignty, as he said in his homily. Lebanese Christians have already paid too much for “arrangements” that did not concern them.

I agree, Rai clearly indicated that Lebanon cannot be exchanged. Only Christians there have said reasonable things more than once, but still the country has turned into a field for other people’s squabbles. I wonder if they now have enough real influence on these trilateral negotiations.

The patriarch is right — Lebanon shouldn't be the bargaining chip in any deal between the US, Iran, or Israel. Christians there have been saying this for years, and it's sad how often their voice gets ignored while the country turns into somebody else's arena. Praying the talks actually bring a real peace instead of just another trade-off.

The patriarch's warning about Lebanon not becoming "the price" in any deal rings true. I've seen how often the Christian communities there get sidelined in these big-power talks, even though they've kept the country's pluralistic identity alive for generations. Do you think the new US-Iran track will actually give them more say this time, or is it likely to be the same old story?
