The special climate chamber in which the Trinity icon is located, transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church in 2023, broke down several months ago. Echo writes about this, as does religion researcher Ksenia Luchenko, with links to sources.

According to Echo’s interlocutor, after the camera broke down, a specialist from Germany was invited to repair it. He repaired it, but after his departure it immediately broke down again - and it was not possible to call an expert again “due to the difficulties of international relations.”

Now the icon is kept in conditions of 80 percent humidity. At the same time, experts insist that it must be stored at a humidity of 50-55%.

As the Echo notes, “The Trinity” is written on three boards. Due to high humidity, boards absorb moisture, swell and the distance between them decreases. Because of this, the icon begins to bend and actually “rolls up into a tube.”

Ksenia Luchenko’s source said that the leadership of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra “for some time was afraid to inform the Tretyakov Gallery, realizing that things were bad with the icon.” According to Lutsenko, it is now in the Lavra’s restoration workshop.
