A damaged icon that cannot be restored should not be thrown away with regular trash. In this case, the shrine must be set on fire or transferred to an Orthodox church. Ivanov explained that a cracked icon, an image with peeling paint or damaged paper base can be shown to specialists. The condition of the shrine can be assessed in icon painting workshops at large churches and monasteries. Professional restoration in some cases allows you to restore even a significantly damaged image.
