Greek President to Archbishop of Australia: Greece always supports Greek language and identity

President of the Hellenic Republic Kosntantinos Tassoulas received Archbishop Makarios of Australia at the Presidential Mansion earlier on Wednesday and congratulated him on the wide-ranging ecclesiastical, social, educational and cultural work of the Archdiocese and of the Archbishop personally.

Tassoulas noted that, through both his religious role and his academic capacity as a professor of bioethics, Archbishop Makarios serves as a bridge of unity with the large and thriving Greek diaspora in Australia.

He also pointed out that the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia is not simply a religious institution, but a national institution that safeguards and preserves Greece’s national identity, the Greek language and the traditions of the homeland.

The president further stressed that the Greek state always supports every initiative aimed at protecting and promoting the Greek language and identity.

In this context, he referred to a recent opportunity to deliver a greeting to the 12th International Summer University, organised in Sydney by the University of Ioannina in cooperation with other organisations in Australia. He said the initiative demonstrated that Hellenism…
