The head of the diocese performed a prayer service before the start of the new school yeartranslated

September 3, 2026 · 1 min read

On August 30, the Head of the Kamchatka Diocese, Archbishop Theodore of Petropavlovsk and Kamchatka, celebrated the Divine Liturgy at the Cathedral of the Holy Life-Giving Trinity in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. At the end of the Liturgy, Vladyka Theodore led a prayer service before the start of the new school year. The prayer service was attended by Natalya Borisovna Nitsenko, Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Kamchatka Territory, Anastasia Alekseevna Zakharovskaya, Minister of Education of the Kamchatka Territory, Inessa Erikovna Koirovich, Commissioner for Children's Rights in the Kamchatka Territory, teachers, students, parishioners. Every year on the eve of September 1, prayer services are held in Orthodox churches before the start of the new school year. This is a special rite in which those praying ask for God’s help and blessing in comprehending and understanding good and soul-helping teaching. On this day they pray not only for students, but also for their teachers. Children are blessed before the start of the school year these days in almost all churches in Kamchatka.

The “children’s” prayer service is considered one of the favorite services of the church year. On this day, churches are filled with children and a special atmosphere. At the end of the prayer service, the Head of the diocese addressed those gathered with a sermon.…

Thanks for the article. My son had a similar pre-school party last year with his teachers, and it's a really different start to the year. It is good that they do this every year in Kamchatka, especially when children and teachers pray together.

Yes, I also took my daughter to such a moleben two years ago, before the seventh grade. There really is a sense of calm after, as if entering the school year with more order. I'm glad that the same is done in Kamchatka, especially because they also pray for the teachers - they need patience and strength all year round.

Yes, I also took my daughter to the moleben at the cathedral in Craiova before she started the seventh grade, just like you two years ago. After that, you really feel a different silence in the house, as if the lessons are coming more and more. What do you think, does prayer help more for children or for teachers?

It's good that your son had such a problem before school. They did the same with us in Telavi this year, the children themselves came with candles. Kamchatka is far away, but it's good that they don't forget there either. What grade did your child move to?

Yes, exactly, prayer for teachers is just as important. I, as a medical assistant, see every day how exhausted the teachers are after the first months, so I prayed for them this year at the monastery in Craiova. Is your daughter in ninth grade now? How did he handle the harder subjects?
